WARNING: The following contains spoilers for "Ignition," part of Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/Hulk, available now from Marvel.

The Hulk has taken down some formidable opponents in his day. Many of these foes have invented some rather elaborate machinery to destroy the Green Goliath. And in "Ignition," part of Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/Hulk, by Donny Cates, Ryan Ottley, Frank Martin and VC's Cory Petit, the Hulk decimates M.O.D.O.K.'s latest upgrade, adding to his list of vanquished foes.

During this short story, the Hulk finds M.O.D.O.K. leading a group of AIM operatives as they plan a mission to colonize the Moon. Naturally, this nefarious plot is thwarted by the Jade Giant, who smashes everyone and everything in sight. With such a destructive foe entering the fray, M.O.D.O.K. has to bring out some heavy artillery.

M.O.D.O.K. unveils his latest project: Giant Organism Designed Only for Smashing (G.O.D.O.S.), a massive suit of armor with the ability to take on the Hulk. This impressive upgrade bursts through the ground beneath the Green Goliath, scattering all those in close proximity.

Giant MODOK Hulk

For a time, G.O.D.O.S. actually does pretty well against the Hulk, slamming him into the ground and throwing him across the room. Inevitably, however, the Hulk destroys M.O.D.O.K.'s upgraded armor, throwing a train through his suit and ending the battle, leaving M.O.D.O.K. for dead as fuel ignites around him.

Ultimately, this fight reinforces the idea that M.O.D.O.K. is far too ineffective to be anything more than a second-tier villain. Even before the fight begins, M.O.D.O.K.'s plan isn't even given enough attention to be explained in detail. Instead, the Hulk breaks down the basic idea of M.O.D.O.K.'s plot, saying that none of it really matters. The Hulk's point is compounded when his captions overshadow M.O.D.O.K.'s speech bubbles.

If M.O.D.O.K.'s plan is this unimportant, he's clearly not a very threatening villain for the Hulk. Additionally, M.O.D.O.K. doesn't even have a good group of soldiers to defend him. AIM has no chance against someone like the Hulk, who destroys the scientists with ease. It's mentioned that the Avengers were originally planning on taking M.O.D.O.K. down, and even then, AIM would fare poorly in a fight.

It's rather strange that M.O.D.O.K. isn't prepared for superhuman interference, after years of dealing with foes like the Avengers. During the fight, M.O.D.O.K. himself is vastly underprepared, with a suit that goes down fairly quickly.

Hulk Modok Defeat

Initially, M.O.D.O.K. puts up a decent fight, but ultimately, his battle with the Hulk takes two pages and ends with his utter defeat. Even though M.O.D.O.K.'s new armor was designed for smashing, it was no match for the Hulk. The fact that M.O.D.O.K. was featured in such a brief skirmish cements the idea that he's not a major threat.

The Hulk wasn't even there specifically to stop M.O.D.O.K., as the ending of this tale reveals. Rather, the Green Goliath was only there to steal M.O.D.O.K.'s technology and take himself into space. Even after facing M.O.D.O.K. for years, the Hulk doesn't take the villain that seriously.

M.O.D.O.K. was just a stop on the Hulk's journey, one which didn't take much time or effort at all. Moreover, M.O.D.O.K. has often been a short stop on many heroes' journeys. For heroes like Captain America, Iron Man and most of the other Avengers, M.O.D.O.K. hasn't been a real A-list threat over the years.

While he might star in his own Hulu series, the fact that M.O.D.O.K. has faced so many different foes highlights how he's never been a major challenge to any one foe. Instead, M.O.D.O.K. has been a brief stop for many of the Avengers, and he's one that hasn't been a huge threat, no matter how many wild upgrades he receives.
