It’s been a while since Rocket Racoon has been able to stand on the shoulders of giants. That’s going to change in Avengers: Infinity War, though, as Thor: Ragnarok actor Mark Ruffalo has confirmed that his character, Hulk, will strike up a friendship with Rocket in the upcoming two-part film.
“It’s a very funny relationship that the two of them have: First of all, it’s the biggest superhero and the smallest,” Ruffalo said in an interview with USA Today. “Just keeping them in a frame together is a feat and hilarious in itself.”
The team-up might be a throwback to the Incredible Hulk issue that introduced Rocket to Marvel Comics. Rocket Raccoon debuted in Incredible Hulk #271 -- Hulk's 20th anniversary issue. The issue saw Hulk awaken on the planet Halfworld, a world populated by talking, sentient animals, one of which is Rocket.
Hulk decides he likes Rocket and his friend, Wal Rus, well enough to help them fend off the evil Robomower, and later the sinister mole Judson Jakes. It's unlikely the story will be adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in its entirety, but it will be interesting to see what Easter eggs, if any, make their way into the final film.
Debuting in theaters on May 4, 2018, Avengers: Infinity War is a production of Marvel Studios starring Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Benicio del Toro, Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Paul Rudd, Don Cheadle and Letitia Wright.
