If you were interested in looking at how much people were fascinated with the Hulk interacting with suits of armor, you would have to look no further than the Avengers series of films. There have only been three of them and yet in two of them, the Hulk interacts with armor. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man is forced to bring out his "Hulkbuster" armor to take down a mind-controlled Hulk. In Avengers: Infinity War, the Hulk is so traumatized by a beating that he received from Thanos that Bruce Banner cannot turn into the Hulk and has to instead spend most of the movie in a spare Iron Man rig.

This fascination with the Hulk and suits of armor likely feeds into two aspects of popular culture that readers are often interested in. One is the sight of something powerful being stomped on. It is awesome to see the Hulk attack a powerful suit of armor and just absolutely trash it. There is a visceral delight in all of that carnage. Secondly is that the sight of someone thought to be ultra-powerful being laid low is also quite compelling. Thus, when the Hulk, who is "the strongest one there is," needs to wear a suit of armor, you just know that something crazy is happening -- and who wouldn't want to see what could force the Hulk into turning to armor? There are times when the Hulk turned to armor for subterfuge, but other times when he really needed the protection that the armor provided.

20 WEARS ARMOR: PLANET HULK

After growing sick of seeing the Hulk rampage through the world and putting innocents into danger, a small group of powerful superheroes known as the Illuminati got together and decided to launch Hulk into outer space so that he would land on an uninhabited, peaceful planet. However, things went wrong when his ship was struck by a meteor and he landed on a warlike planet instead.

The Hulk soon took part in the gladiator combats on the planet and as part of that, he wore battle armor. He soon conquered the whole planet and then returned to Earth to gain revenge on the heroes who exiled him.

19 SMASHES ARMOR: IRON MAN

The Hulk's quest for vengeance was based on a lie by one of his own allies, Miek. Miek sabotaged the ship that the Hulk arrived on and saw it blow up and the flames engulfed the Hulk's new wife. Miek then told the Hulk that it was the Illuminati who did it. That is what brought Hulk back willing to take on his old allies.

Iron Man built a strong "Hulkbuster" armor to take on the Hulk, but in a sprawling battle that spread throughout New York City, the Hulk emerged the winner, as he tore Iron Man's armor apart. The angrier the Hulk gets, the stronger he gets and he was extremely angry at Iron Man.

18 WEARS ARMOR: S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hulk's desire for revenge almost saw him tear the entire planet Earth apart. He discovered that the heroes had not sabotaged his ship and he agreed to surrender.

Eventually, he decided that he would make up for his rampaging past by going to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. as both a scientist in his Bruce Banner identity and also as a super-powered operative as the Hulk. He had a special armor designed to protect himself when he returned to his Banner self. The armor protected him from the elements, as well. It also was able to expand when he transformed into the Hulk, so no more torn purple pants!

17 SMASHES ARMOR: ONSLAUGHT

After years of being enemies, Xavier finally decided he had to wipe Magneto's mind to stop him from being a threat anymore. What Xaver did not realize that by erasing Magneto's mind, his psyche sort of attached itself to Xavier's psyche. It slowly but surely began to corrupt the X-Men founder. Xavier was such a powerful telepath that his psionic energy merged with Magneto's psyche to form a new being known as Onslaught.

It built a powerful armor to contain the energy. In a final battle against the X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four, the Hulk grew so angry that he was able to crack Onslaught's armor open. The heroes were then able to absorb Onslaught's energy to stop him.

16 WEARS ARMOR: PSI-ARMOR

Onslaught's ultimate plan was that he would give up his armor and take over the body of Nate Grey, who was an alternate reality version of Cable, only without the techno-organic virus that Cable has to constantly use his powers to hold back, weakening him. So Nate Gray was one of the most powerful telepathic/telekinetic being in the Marvel Universe.

Soon after Onslaught was defeated, Nate and Hulk teamed up again to take on the Mad Titan, Thanos. When Nate was taken out of the fight, he used his powers to give Hulk a psionic armor, making him powerful enough to defeat Thanos.

15 SMASHES ARMOR: DOCTOR DOOM

In Incredible Hulk #144, Doctor Doom faked the Hulk's demise so that he could use Bruce Banner's scientific mind and the Hulk's super strength as a sort of super-slave. Doom planned on building Gamma bombs to force the countries around Latveria to capitulate to Doom.

However, while trying to impress his former girlfriend, Valeria, by showing her how he had the Hulk under his control, she was instead shocked and disgusted by Doom. She allowed the Hulk to escape. He then attacked Doctor Doom and crushed his armor and was about to crush him to pieces when Valeria asked him to spare Doom. He agreed and stormed off, while Doom yelled after him to ask him to come back and finish the fight!

14 WEARS ARMOR: APOCALYPSE

During the Onslaught event, the heroes defeated Onslaught by soaking up his psionic energy. In doing so, though, it looked as though it extinguished them all. In reality, they were sent to an alternate Earth. The Hulk was split into two beings from his attack on Onslaught -- Banner and the Hulk. Without Banner, the Hulk was out of sorts.

Apocalypse took advantage of the situation by swooping in and brainwashing the Hulk into becoming his new horseman, War. He gave him a powerful suit of armor and also amplified the Hulk's already prodigious strength. Eventually, the Hulk broke free of Apocalypse's control.

13 SMASHES ARMOR: JUGGERNAUT

While the Hulk was still under Apocalypse's control, the seemingly immortal mutant villain sent Hulk after the Juggernaut. The Hulk has fought the Juggernaut a number of times over the years and despite the Juggernaut ostensibly being "unstoppable," the Hulk has handled him very well most of the time. However, he very rarely just trashed him.

That was what happened here, where the Hulk pummelled him so much that he seemed to be literally just a step away from actually ending the Juggernaut's life. Luckily, a visitor from the future intervened and then the Hulk regained control over his senses. During the confusion, Juggernaut made sure to run away.

12 WEARS ARMOR: JARELLA'S WORLD

In Incredible Hulk #140, in a story based on a plot by Harlan Ellison, the Hulk suddenly found himself transported to a whole new world. It was a sort of medieval realm where everyone was green like him. He saved a local kingdom and they rewarded him by making him their king.

They gave him a suit of ceremonial armor and introduced him to the queen, whom he was going to marry. Named Jarella, she was a beautiful green woman who the Hulk fell for instantly. Sadly, he was then transported away, not knowing that this world existed just as a microscopic speck on the Hulk's purple pants!

11 SMASHES ARMOR: MANDROIDS

The Mandroid armor was originally devised to give S.H.I.E.L.D. the ability to be on more of an even playing field with the Avengers in case they ever had to take down Earth's Mightiest Heroes. They were actually developed by Tony Stark himself for the peacekeeping organization.

Later, a special Super-Mandroid armor was designed as a "Hulkbuster" to take on the Hulk. Major Glenn Talbot volunteered to operate the armor and attack the Hulk, but things did not go well for Talbot. The Hulk handled this "super" Mandroid easily. Sadly, Talbot became so obsessed with capturing the Hulk that he then took over an experimental battleship that later exploded, ending Talbot's life.

10 WEARS ARMOR: FEAR ITSELF

During the crossover event, Fear Itself, we discovered that Odin had an older brother that had ruled Asgard before Thor's father. When he was awoken from the prison that Odin had placed him in millennia ago, he unleashed a series of hammers that contained the essences of his children.

These hammers landed on Earth and attracted powerful heroes and villains from across the planet. The Hulk picked up one of the hammers and was transformed into Nul, the Breaker of Worlds. Transforming into Nul gave the Hulk magical armor. In the end, the possessions were all halted by the defeat of their father.

9 SMASHES ARMOR: ZARRKO

During his time working for S.H.I.E.L.D., the Hulk ended up in a special division called T.I.M.E. that dealt with the ramifications of time itself being broken apart during the Age of Ultron crossover. They worked with the villainous time traveler Zarrko to take down a group of rogue time travelers known as the Chronarchists, who were going through history and messing with stuff.

It turned out that a future version of Zarrko, decked out in futuristic armor, was orchestrating everything to free his younger self by increasing the Hulk's strength until he would tear apart the prison that the younger Zarrko was kept in. The Hulk, though, punched through time itself to take out the future Zarrko!

8 WEARS ARMOR: THE WATCHER

In the final story arc of the second, and longest-running, Incredible Hulk series, the Hulk teams up with the Amphibian, one of his oldest enemies, to help save the Amphibian's people with a device that could only be found on the Watcher's world. At the same time, another alien planet claims that the shield protecting the Watcher's world is interfering with their minds.

The Hulk had to wear a special space armor to withstand the journey to the home of the Watcher, whose force field uses bad memories of people's past to mess with them. In the end, the aliens who claimed that the force field was driving them nuts were actually secret alien invaders. The Hulk fought them off.

7 SMASHES ARMOR: M.O.D.O.K.

MODOK looking menacing in Marvel Comics.

Generally speaking, the villainous M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for...and then the K has changed a few times over the years) has been known for the fact that he is a mutated giant head that attacks through telepathy and his general evil genius.

However, in Incredible Hulk #167, the villain actually built a special suit of armor that allowed it to attack the Hulk with arms and a leg! Of course, the problem for M.O.D.O.K. was that the Hulk simply trashed each arm and leg one by one, until the bad guy was back to simply a floating head once more.

6 WEARS ARMOR: IRON MAN

A few years back, Marvel decided to launch a title that would put together the heroes who were going to be in the then-new Avengers film, despite the fact that the lineup in the film had never been a team before in the comics at the time. Simultaneously, Marvel also re-introduced the Guardians of the Galaxy with a new lineup that would basically be the one that would later appear in the first Guardians film.

The two teams teamed up to fight Thanos. During the battle, Iron Man is seemingly teamed up with Thor when the armor suddenly tears open and the heroes revealed that they hid Hulk in a spare Iron Man suit for the element of surprise!

5 SMASHES ARMOR: HIGH EVOLUTONARY

One of the more powerful armored heroes in the Marvel Universe is the High Evolutionary, the being who helped create an entire planet of people as part of his experiment of wanting to almost be a sort of new god. However, while his genetic skills make him feel like he can play god, the simple fact of the matter is that he most commonly "just" a guy wearing a standard suit of armor.

So when he ran afoul of the Hulk one time (even devolving the Hulk's friends into monkeys), the Hulk responded by trashing him so badly that he turned into a pile of goo that slithered away to regroup.

4 WEARS ARMOR: SMART HULK

In a famous storyline in the early 1980s, after an adventure in outer space where a villain had absorbed a lot of his gamma radiation, the Hulk was shocked to learn that suddenly he had Banner's mind in control of the Hulk's body!

Now that he was no longer savage, the Hulk quickly secured a pardon from the government and was offered a spot on the Avengers. Banner instead decided to continue his work as a scientist, just in the Hulk's body! He began to build weapons so big that even the Hulk needed special armor to lift the power source for them! Sadly, this arrangement fell apart and the Hulk became savage once more.

3 SMASHES ARMOR: REDEEMER

For a brief period in time after the then-savage Hulk continued a rampage in the early 1980s, the Hulk and Bruce Banner were successfully split from each other. Banner felt a responsibility for the Hulk, who quickly escaped custody. Banner put together a team of "Hulkbusters," mostly using people who had personal connections to the Hulk's past rampages.

One of these was a man who wore a powerful suit of armor called the Redeemer. When Banner re-merged with the Hulk, some of the Hulkbusters stopped chasing the Hulk, but Redeemer continued to hunt down the jade giant, even working with the villainous Leader to do so! Sadly, his armor was later wrecked and his life was over.

2 WEARS ARMOR: TROYJAN WAR

Doctor Leonard Samson figured out that the reason the previous time Banner took over didn't work is because Banner and the Hulk personalities were still fighting each other. So Samson used hypnosis to let the different personalities merge together to form one unified Hulk. It had Banner's mind but it still had some of the Hulk's savagery in there, as well.

This version of the Hulk worked for a peacekeeping group known as the Pantheon. He learned that one of the group had been betrothed to the son of an alien warlord in exchange for a truth between their planet and Earth. When she rejected the son, it caused trouble and Hulk took to outer space in special space armor to resolve the situation.

1 SMASHES ARMOR: COBALT MAN

One of the stranger villains of the 1960s was the nuclear-powered villain known as the Cobalt Man, who believed that he had to warn the world of the dangers of nuclear weapons, especially those involving cobalt, by showing the powerful results of his own suit of armor that was powered by cobalt radiation.

He decided that the best way to show the world how awful it was was to wipe out a city in Australia. The Hulk tried to stop him and the final solution was to send both of them into outer space, where they detonated together. Only the Hulk survived the explosion and he eventually fell back to Earth. Sadly, the event inspired the U.S. military to build a new cobalt bomb.
