Hugo, The Artist Lead Oscars

Hugo, director Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Brian Selznick's 2007 comics/prose hybrid novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, won five Academy Awards on Sunday, tying with The Artist. The latter was named best picture, marking the first time in 83 years that a silent movie to claim top honors.

The Artist also walked away with wins in four other categories, including best actor for Jean Dujardin and best director for Michel Hazanavicius. Hugo took home awards for visual effects, sound mixing, sound editing, art direction and cinematography.

Other winners -- none of them exactly surprises -- included Meryl Streep for best actress in The Iron Lady, Christopher Plummer for best supporting actor in Beginners, Octavia Spencer for best supporting actress in The Help, and Rango for best animated feature.
