Hugh Jackman Urges People To Wear Sunscreen After Cancer Scare

“X-Men” and “Wolverine” star Hugh Jackman is using his most recent brush with skin cancer to advocate for the usage of sunscreen. Jackman revealed via Instagram and Twitter that he recently had his fifth basal cell carcinoma removed; the actor has had four such cancers on his nose and one on his shoulder. His social media post urges everyone to wear sunscreen, which is a form of protection that the actor did not consider using when he was growing up in Australia.

Jackman previously opened up about his cancer scare with “People,” telling the magazine in May 2015 that his makeup artist on “X-Men: Days of Future Past” noticed the initial cancerous spots.

“Being an Australian it’s a very common thing. I never wore sunscreen growing up so I was a prime candidate for it,” said Jackman. “I was trying to keep calm about it but it wasn’t until [his skin cancer surgeon] Dr. Michael Albom really explained to me that what I had, in a way, was the kind of skin cancer you want to have if you’re going to have it. Basal cell carcinoma is just something you have to deal with. It’s cancerous. It will grow. You just have to get it out.”

Since being diagnosed, Jackman has launched a line of sunscreen — Pure Sun Defense — and goes in for check ups every three months.
