Warner Bros. released the trailer for Reminiscence, a trippy, original sci-fi thriller written and directed by HBO's Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy, making her feature debut.
The trailer introduces the movie's futuristic setting, a world in which global warming has left Miami's coast underwater. “When the waters began to rise and war broke out, nostalgia became a way of life,” narrates Hugh Jackman's Nick Bannister, a private investigator who uses advanced technology to allow his clients to access lost memories. “There wasn’t a lot to look forward to, so people began looking back. Nothing is more addictive than the past.”
From there, the trailer introduces Rebecca Ferguson as Mae, a mysterious client who abruptly vanishes, leaving Nick to uncover the dangerous truth behind her disappearance. The video suggests Reminiscence touches on many of the same themes as Westworld, raising questions about the nature of memory, identity and technology. Westworld's Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead) and Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands) also play key roles, with Newton specifically portraying Nick's associate.
Originally scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 16, Reminiscence was delayed to September 3 after Warner Bros. rearranged its release schedule in response to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It later moved up to August 27 to avoid having to open against Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, before shifting up again to August 20. Like the rest of Warner Bros.' 2021 theatrical slate, Reminiscence will debut theatrically on the same date it begins streaming on HBO Max for 31 days.
The official synopsis for Reminiscence reads,
Nick Bannister, a private investigator of the mind, navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami coast, his life is forever changed when he takes on a new client, Mae. A simple matter of lost and found becomes a dangerous obsession. As Bannister fights to find the truth about Mae's disappearance, he uncovers a violent conspiracy, and must ultimately answer the question: how far would you go to hold on to the ones you love?
Directed by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Marina de Tavira, Daniel Wu, Mojean Aria, Brett Cullen, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan and Nico Parker. It premieres in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 20.
