Hugh Jackman recently revealed that it felt "awesome" to see X-Men fans embrace his version of Wolverine when he made his debut as the fan-favorite mutant in 2000's X-Men.

"Yeah, I'll tell you one of the moments I'd like to relive around Logan," Jackman told Den of Geek. "It was the first time I saw X-Men in a cinema with audiences. And I did it because Tom Rothman, who was one of the execs at the time at Fox, said if you want to understand this movie, you have to go and see it with an audience in Times Square at 10 p.m. on a Friday night. And I was like, 'Alright.'"

The actor added that, because no one knew who he was at the time, he was able to slip into the film unnoticed. "So I just walked in, sat up in the back, I watched the movie, and [it was like] woah," Jackman said. "We don't watch movies like that in Australia. There's no yelling and screaming and cheering, no 'Yo Wolverine!' and booing [the villains]."

"That was awesome," he said. "I would love to go and relive that moment because I was super nervous, it was my first movie and I didn't know what to expect. I'd love to go back and just really enjoy that."

In addition to appearing as Wolverine in X-Men, Jackman reprised the role in X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and Logan (2017). Jackman-as-Wolverine also made an uncredited cameo appearance in X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018).

While rumors have circulated that Jackman would return as Wolverine now that Marvel has acquired the rights to the X-Men characters, Jackman recently shot down any hopes of that coming true. Specifically, the actor said, "That fact that I'm hearing about this from you, and there's nothing in my inbox from [Marvel President] Kevin Feige means it's probably, no matter what idea I came up with, not on the table."

Jackman added that he knew his run as Wolverine was over when he read the script for Logan, noting, "We knew what it was going to be-ish, right? And I thought this is it. And that really helped me, it really helped knowing I was going into my last season, that it was my last season that I made the most of it. And it's still a character I hold close to my heart. But I know it's done."

Jackman currently stars in Reminiscence, which is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
