The Academy Award-nominated actor has long been rumored to reprise his role as Wolverine, who he first played in 2000's X-Men. This speculation comes despite Jackman's intent to retire from the character following the release of Logan in 2017. In June, rumors of Jackman's return once again began circulating when he tweeted a photo of himself looking at his phone with a surprised look on his face.

Jackman and Reynolds Reunite

Rumors also speculate that Jackman's possible return as the iconic X-Men would come in Marvel Studios' upcoming third Deadpool film, which will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shawn Levy, who will be directing the upcoming Ryan Reynolds-led film, recently stated his intent to put both actors in a film together, although he did not confirm if this would be in Deadpool 3. "I'm not going to say where and how, but I absolutely will confirm my intention and determination to be the lucky son of a ***** who puts those two magnificent gods in the same movie together," Levy said. "That will happen and that will be me."

While Jackman's return as Logan remains unclear, this does not necessarily mean the character won't appear in a future MCU project. "It's gotta be someone shorter this time. So maybe a Zack Galifianakis or Patton Oswalt, someone like that," Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick said in reference to who could play the MCU's Wolverine. "I think that if [Marvel is] playing their cards right, they probably should make it someone we've never seen."

Recently, Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Rocketman) met with Marvel Studios President and Marvel Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige about potentially joining the MCU. While the character he would appear as has not been revealed, there is a possibility Egerton could be the MCU's Wolverine. "I don’t think it would be wrong to say that," Egerton said. "I'd be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh is so associated with the role that I'd wonder if it'd be very difficult for someone else to do it. But hopefully if it does come around, they'll give me a shot."

Deadpool 3 has no current release date at this time.
