So, whatever happened to that supposedly on-the-way third Ghostbuster movie? It’s that dastardly Bill Murray’s fault that it hasn’t arrived yet, isn’t it? Well, not exactly — at least not if you ask Murray himself.
The erstwhile Peter Venkman was asked the very same question during an interview with GQ Magazine. When asked for an update on Ghostbusters 3, Murray pointed towards the screenwriters of Year One, Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, as the reason that the project hasn’t gone ahead yet.
Here’s the scoop on Ghostbusters 3, according to the ever-unrestrained Murray…
It’s all a bunch of crock. It’s a crock. There was a story — and I gotta be careful here, I don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. When I hurt someone’s feelings, I really want to hurt them. [laughs] Harold Ramis said, Oh, I’ve got these guys, they write on The Office, and they’re really funny. They’re going to write the next Ghostbusters. And they had just written this movie that he had directed. …
Year One. Well, I never went to see Year One, but people who did, including other Ghostbusters, said it was one of the worst things they had ever seen in their lives. So that dream just vaporized. That was gone. But it’s the studio that really wants this thing. It’s a franchise. It’s a franchise, and they made a whole lot of money on Ghostbusters.
So, there you have it. Hopes for Ghostbusters 3 aren’t completely diminished, just sidelined due to the horrors of Year One. Speaking of, I just saw that movie for the first time the other day and I didn’t think it was that bad. Not that good, mind you, but certainly not the worst piece of filmmaking I’ve ever laid eyes on.
