While How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is poised to retain its top spot at the domestic box office this weekend, it faces the sharpest drop in franchise history.

Industry analysts estimate the third How to Train Your Dragon film will earn $26 million at the domestic box office this weekend, just edging out A Madea Family Reunion opening this weekend. While impressive, it is a 53 percent drop from its opening weekend last week.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 had experienced a 50 percent drop with its second weekend box office in 2014 while 2010's original film saw a decrease in 34 percent in its second weekend, an astonishing accomplishment for the DreamWorks animated film.

A major factor may be the release date for the third film; while The Hidden World has opened in February, How to Train Your Dragon 2 opened in the summer and the original film opened in the spring. With Captain Marvel opening this coming weekend, it will be interesting to see how the animated film fares in its third weekend.
