WARNING: The following contains spoilers for This Is Us Season 5, Episode 16, "Adirondacks," which aired Tuesday on NBC.

The Season 5 finale of This Is Us aired on Tuesday with a shocking twist ending that is only one of the many ways the show has set up its sixth and final season.

Season 5, Episode 16, "Adirondacks," wraps up a few storylines but sets up many more to be explored next season. The episode ends with a flash forward that carries the brunt of this set-up, but there are other smaller storylines to keep in mind as well.

What's Going On With Deja?

A small plot line of the season finale is Deja's relationship with her boyfriend, Malik. Annie asks her if she is planning on marrying Malik and Deja plays it off like she's not, but also hints that she actually has thought about that potential future together. In the meantime, Malik is waiting to here from the four Philadelphia area colleges he has applied to for admissions. He later reveals to Deja that he also applied to Harvard in secret and was accepted there. If he does decide to go to Harvard, it would cause his relationship to go long distance with Deja which was not in their original plan.

Also during the season, there was a flash forward to Deja as a medical student with the secret knowledge that she is pregnant. Still unknown by audiences is who the baby's father is and what her relationship status is with that person. This reveal came as part of a series of flash forwards which take place at the house Kevin has built for Rebecca based on a long-abandoned plan of Jack's to build her that house.

Kevin's Future

Kevin has seemingly ruined his acting reputation, and has subsequently been left as an unmarried father. Kevin went through a lot this season, and the finale ended with Rebecca giving him a project to keep him busy and motivated. She asks him to build her the house Jack had planned on building her on the land where the family cabin stands. This house is featured in a series of flash forwards that see the Pearson clan show up to what is presumably Rebecca's deathbed.

In the season finale flash forward, Kevin is revealed to be prepping a wedding toast for someone else's wedding and reading off stationary that says Big Three Construction - which was Jack's dream career goal. In a truly shocking moment, it's revealed to be Kate's wedding. As the wedding is about to start, Kevin interacts with Madison, one of Kate's bridesmaids. They seem to be on really good terms despite Madison calling off their own wedding in the same episode. Madison's plan was to co-parent their children and this interaction could indicate how effective this plan turns out to be, or it could hint that Kevin was right when he said he was sure he could grow to love her. Kevin's marital status will likely be cleared up next season.

Kate and Toby's Breakup

During the season finale, Kate and Toby seem as strong and in love as they have ever been. However, in the flash forward, it is revealed that Kate is actually getting married to her current boss, Philip. Therefore, the show has set up the fact that audiences can expect a breakup of the Kate and Toby relationship that has been going strong since the first season. Previously, there were flashbacks of Toby suffering from depression and not wearing his wedding ring. Also in the flash forwards to Rebecca's deathbed, Toby is present with the family, essentially confirming that the pair break up, and not that Toby's dies or anything like that.

Kate's professional relationship with Philip originally got off to a rocky start when he tells her he never wanted to hire her in the first place. He looks down on her lack of experience and credentials. However, in this episode, hints of warmth and respect fly between the pair when Philip refuses to accept Kate's resignation when she tries to quit in order to support Toby's job move. Toby has been very preoccupied with his own unemployment and hasn't shown much interest in Kate's new vocation. Perhaps that was the beginning of the end for these parents of two.

Created by Dan Fogelman, This Is Us stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown, Chris Sullivan and Susan Kelechi Watson. New episodes air Tuesdays at 9pm ET/PT on NBC.
