The romance between Shadowcat of the X-Men and Star-Lord of the Guardians of the Galaxy was a relatively short-lived one -- even though they did end up almost getting married in the process. But along the way, this connection ended up setting up the space-faring hero to make a surprising connection with another mutant hero.

While stranded on Earth for a time, Star-Lord made some surprising friends on Earth -- including Old Man Logan, making him one of the only ex-boyfriends of Shadowcat to earn Wolverine's apparent approval.

Star-Lord Old Man Logan 1

The Star-Lord miniseries by Chip Zdarsky, Kris Anka, Matthew Wilson, and VC's Cory Petit come at a dark time for Peter Quill. Alongside the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy (including his then-fiancee Kitty Pryde), Star-Lord came to Earth at the request of Captain Marvel to back her up in the events of Civil War II. In the ensuing battle between heroes, Star-Lord lost his ship, stranding the team on Earth. The team subsequently split up over the revelation that Quill was aware Thanos was on Earth and kept it from his teammates, and Kitty left him in the process of returning to the X-Men. With few other prospects, Star-Lord tried to still be friends with Kitty -- running afoul of her during a school trip to an art museum and earning the apparent judgment of Old Man Logan.

Coming during a period where the Logan of Earth-616 was believed dead and Old Man Logan had briefly taken his place, But finding Quill later in the night and recognizing that he's in a bad place, Logan ends up taking him out to a bar to vent about his problems. The two end up bonding over their surprisingly shared problems -- trapped in a world that's not really built for them, and trying to just survive day-to-day. The pair even bond by teaming up in a fight against a gang who attack the bar they'd decided to visit. But in the process, Star-Lord is blamed for the ensuing chaos and arrested -- forcing him to take a plea deal that involves a hundred hours of community service and paying a $10,000 fine.

Star-Lord Old Man Logan 3

To make ends meet, he ends up taking a job at the Bar With No Name, and trying to keep his head low -- which proves to be an incredibly difficult act for Quill, as he's dragged into a long-standing Daredevil investigation, has a team-up with a very annoyed Ms. Marvel, and ends up providing Shocker back up while investigating the disappearance of a fellow villain. But all of the friendships he makes ends up coming to his aid when Peter comes afoul of Black Widow -- including Logan, who throws himself into fights to help protect Quill and his newfound friends at the Bar With No Name. Later, Logan and Quill end up having another conversation -- with Logan even picking a fight just so Quill can get out his anger before cooling the Guardian of the Galaxy with a surprisingly tight hug.

It's a surprisingly sweet acknowledgment from Logan, especially given his long history of being overly protective of Kitty Pryde when it comes to boyfriends. But it seems that Old Man Logan could see the surprisingly good soul in Quill, and even though his romance with Pryde fizzled out, he was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and become friends with the Star-Lord of Earth-616. It also speaks to the kind of potential Quill genuinely does have, even if he can be immature and short-sighted at times -- especially now that even a few years later, Quill has reinvented himself as a much more capable and worldly hero.
