WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Love and Monsters, now available on digital and premium video on demand.

Love and Monsters ends on a triumphant note for Dylan O'Brien's Joel, because even though he doesn't officially end up back with Aimee after their seven-year separation, he finds himself and the warrior within. This leads to him guiding his colony to the mountains, where it's said there are fewer monster attacks. Soon, other colonies start following his radio instructions so as to join up.

However, there are some lingering plot threads a pretty intense and fun sequel in which Joel strives to preserve mankind's future.

The War Continues... and Evolves

Joel's crew could run into more monsters. While we previously saw snails, centipedes and toads, there are still also wolves, snakes, lizards and so many other animals to explore. Plus, seeing as an asteroid was responsible for mutating Earth, the franchise could potentially introduce aliens or hybrid species into the mix.

The human colonies could also upgrade their weapons and move from  knives, bombs and guns to tanks, bazookas and maybe even helicopters. Notably, Joel met a MAV1S robot along the way, so some humans could reprogram them to help fight off monsters and protect society.

The Human Problem in Love and Monsters

In Love and Monsters, Cap proved how sinister humans can be by trying to raid Aimee's colony and feed them to a giant crab. So with the various colonies coming together, a sequel can follow the various personalities that'll clash. This could result in alliances being formed, with lines drawn in the sand to figure out who is really heroic.

This creates a dynamic similar to The Walking Dead and civil wars could even have Clyde and Minnow arguing with Joel on how society should run. All this infighting and human villains rising up are inevitable in times of the apocalypse, which would help Minnow grow into something more than just a sidekick. She considers Clyde a father and Joel a brother, so it'll be interesting getting her perspective on this cruel side of people.

Joel and Aimee Settling Their Relationship

Aimee moved on, but Joel did kiss her when he left. She vowed to come find him, so a sequel can flip the script and have Aimee searching for Joel. Seeing as she's holding his sketchbook on fighting off monsters, she may want to rekindle their relationship. A Love and Monsters sequel could even complicate things more by having Joel finding someone to create romantic drama, or possibly by revealing Aimee's ex isn't actually dead. The post-apocalypse has definitely served as compelling backdrop for love triangles in such shows as The Walking Dead, so a Love and Monsters sequel could follow suit in that regard.

Of course, the follow-up to Love and Monsters could just simply unite the lovers and have them try to create a utopia that's safe from monsters. Both are strong  warriors and have a good rapport, so it would be great to have them realize that they should put aside duty and enjoy each other's company.

Directed by Michael Matthews and written by Brian Duffield and Matthew Robinson, Love and Monsters stars Dylan O’Brien, Jessica Henwick, Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt. The movie is currently available on digital and premium video on demand.
