After Resident Evil 6's divisive response, including criticism that the video game franchise had strayed too far from its survival horror roots, Capcom decided to move Resident Evil in a different direction for its next main installment. What resulted was 2017's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which introduced new protagonist Ethan Winters to the franchise, investigating a remote mansion deep in the Louisiana bayou for his missing wife Mia, only to discover something sinister festering inside.

Lauded as a return to form for the franchise and praised for its emphasis on horror over action and shift to first-person gameplay, Resident Evil 7 received a whole wave of story DLC content to expand the adventure. Here is how long it takes to beat the main game and accompanying DLC in addition to completing the entire survival horror title in full.

Mia attacks in Capcom Resident Evil 7.

Resident Evil 7's main story has Ethan venture inside the Dulvey Mansion, where he learns Mia has been taken hostage by the deranged Baker family and infected with a mutagenic mold that has driven them all murderously insane. Quickly trapped in the mansion, the main game -- from Ethan's adventures in the mansion to an exploration of a nearby crashed freighter -- takes approximately nine hours on a single playthrough. The game rewards playthroughs of less than four hours with unlockable extras and a trophy/achievement, with speed-runners beating the game in less than two hours.

The accompanying DLC story content comes with a compilation of short gameplay modes expanding the game's story known as Banned Footage. This comes in two volumes as an unfortunate cameraman named Clancy Jarvis has his own nightmarish ordeal facing the Baker family before Ethan.

Another episode in Banned Footage has the Bakers' daughter, Zoe, escape the initial attack on her family. There are two additional story DLC expansions, one of which shows Zoe's uncle Joe on a mission to rescue his niece, and another that follows Chris Redfield in an epilogue set after the main game. The story-based DLC takes approximately three to four hours in all to beat.

How Long Does It Take to Complete Resident Evil 7: Biohazard?

Beating Resident Evil 7 for the first time unlocks the Madhouse difficulty setting, which is not only the hardest difficulty setting in the game, but remixes item placement and limits the amount of saves players can perform based on the number of cassette tapes they can gather. This adds another seven to nine hours of gameplay to completion time for players looking to earn all the trophies/achievements for the title.

In addition to the story-based DLC, both volumes of Banned Footage also adds three game modes that are more combat-oriented and based on achieving a high score. Banned Footage Vol. 1 adds "Nightmare" and "Ethan Must Die" modes, with the former featuring Clancy battling the Molded and Jack Baker in the mansion's basement, while the latter streamlines Ethan fighting Jack and his infected wife Marguerite across the property. Banned Footage Vol. 2 adds "Jack's 55th Birthday" as Mia gathers birthday food for Jack to enjoy in various areas of the property to satisfy the Baker family patriarch.

These additional game modes add approximately two hours of gameplay to fully complete Resident Evil 7 for intrepid gamers looking to unlock all the trophies and achievements. Combined with an initial playthrough of Resident Evil 7's main game, a subsequent playthrough on the Madhouse difficulty setting and all of the DLC expansions, this brings the total completion time for Resident Evil 7 to approximately 21-24 hours in all.
