WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Equinox, now streaming on Netflix.

Season 1 of Netflix's Equinox really leaves fans wondering exactly who kidnapped a bunch of teens in their school bus two decades ago in a small Danish town. Luckily, as the six episodes unravel, Astrid starts establishing a mental connection to the red world they're trapped in because her sister Ida's there. She quickly discovers the Hare King's at fault as Ida was betrothed to him as part of a selfish pact their mom, Lene, made when she realized she was barren.

However, the big twist is that Astrid's been lured back home by the king as she's next in line, shockingly deciding to accept his deal as she doesn't trust humanity anymore. But while she and the Hare King go off to chart a new life in his supernatural world, there are a few threads a second season could pick up on.

Lene's New Mission

Astrid chided Lene for making the pact and getting Ida pregnant all so Lene could offer this baby to the Hare King. Unfortunately, Ida secretly aborted it, which is why the angry king kidnapped the teens, meaning Lene is responsible for robbing her daughters of their agency by never revealing the truth. Season 2 could make up for her ruining their lives and giving them a predestined fate by having her come to the king's world.

It's never revealed how, but she has a way to find the king and broker deals. It seems she was part of his pagan cult, so she could use them to track him down and rescue the ladies -- at least if they want to be rescued. Knowing Lene, she will try to make a new deal, but that could force her to continue the king's game where he keeps tricking women into prepping new sacrifices and queens for him. He already has human agents outside of the cult helping manipulating other people, meaning Lene could end up a victim.

Protecting Astrid's Daughter

It's implied from the pagan fable that the king seeks a new queen as the years go by, and this role, known as Ostara, could fall to the other member of Lene's bloodline: Astrid's young daughter, Vera. The king (Henrik, Ida's old music teacher) has no problem grooming them, so if there's a time-jump, Season 2 can look at her mental connection to her mom. Once Vera starts seeing the supernatural realm when the next cycle begins in 21 years, she's definitely next.

Astrid might even have agreed to wed Henrik and go to his home just to protect the girl, so she may be playing a game of her own. This time she'll have Ida at her side, although she's still in her teenage form. Nonetheless, protecting her niece can allow Ida to return the favor to Astrid, all while proving she's not the victim and damsel in distress Season 1 shaped her as. Ida's a true fighter and this might even allow them to reconnect with Lene to save the next in line, granting Lene some form of redemption in the process.

The Tale of the Returned

When Astrid and Ida chose to stay with Henrik, he returned the abducted teens to the town, but they were seen roaming in fields, dazed and confused. His powers already drove Jakob, Falke and Amelia mad as they were pawns he used to play Ida and Astrid, so he could be sending these teens back as spies. If he leaves his grimoire with some of them, it could repeat this cycle of parents and teens trying to offer themselves to him.

Some might use their connection to his prison to fight back. However, it's more than likely they'll fear him capturing them again and want to perpetuate his game. Either way, when it comes to Lene and her daughters, the returned are set to become either allies or foes due to their shared history and the fact they're not the same after their decades-long ordeal.

Created by Tea Lindeburg, Equinox stars Danica Curcic, Lars Brygmann, Karoline Hamm and Hanne Hedelund. Season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix.
