Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Daredevil #21, by Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, Mattia Iacono and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Daredevil constantly endures more hardships than any other comic book hero. The Man Without Fear has suffered personal losses, heartbreak and especially physical pain. Through it all, Matt Murdock manages to persevere. Even after committing manslaughter, Murdock recovers his strength to become a smarter and more efficient Daredevil. Despite this personal recovery, Murdock realizes that he must be held legally accountable and turns himself in for his crimes. While this is a shocking move, it's also not the first time that Daredevil's been faced with prison.

During Brian Michael Bendis' acclaimed Daredevil run, a lackey for the Kingpin revealed Murdock's secret identity to the FBI. Although the agency decided to keep this information a secret, one agent leaked Daredevil's identity to the press, leading to Murdock's infamous "outing." Still, since there was no proof, Murdock remained free.

Eventually, however, Wilson Fisk claimed to possess "the Murdock Papers," proof that Murdock was Daredevil. Fisk agreed to exchange this evidence for immunity for his own crimes, leading to a manhunt for Daredevil. Even though the evidence was revealed to be a hoax, the FBI still cornered Daredevil and arrested him. Bendis' run on the title ended with both Murdock and Fisk in prison.

Ed Brubaker then took the reins of Daredevil, picking up where Bendis had left off. Initially, Murdock remained docile in prison, trying to acquit himself legally. The torment of his fellow prisoners continued, however, reaching a breaking point when Daredevil's best friend, Foggy Nelson, was murdered while visiting Murdock. Enraged, Daredevil began the hunt for the mastermind behind Foggy's murder.

This investigation reached all corners of the prison, resulting in several violent beatdowns of super-criminals, such as the Owl and Hammerhead. Murdock even threatened Fisk for information on Foggy's killer. While in prison, Murdock also became aware of a mysterious figure acting as Daredevil in his absence. The mystery of this new Daredevil motivated Murdock even further to get out of prison quickly.

Soon enough, the Man Without Fear got his chance to escape. The supervillain Black Tarantula staged a prison riot, giving Murdock the perfect opportunity. For a brief moment, Murdock teamed with Fisk and Bullseye to fend off the rioters while he made his escape.

Daredevil still could not allow killers like Bullseye and Fisk to escape, so he incapacitated his longtime enemies before he left. Murdock then found the hPunisher, teaming with the anti-hero to stage his own escape. To cover his secret identity, Daredevil made it seem as if the Punisher had taken him hostage.

Free from prison, Murdock discovered the new Daredevil was Iron Fist, who was hired by the same person who orchestrated Foggy's murder. Daredevil then traveled around Europe, following the trail of this mastermind, who was none other than Vanessa Fisk, the Kingpin's wife.

Vanessa revealed that she was dying and as her last act, she wanted revenge on both her husband and Murdock for ruining her life. Considering her mission accomplished, Vanessa arranged to solve Murdock's legal problems by having the director of the FBI killed and making it seem as if Murdock's arrest was a framing by the agency. Foggy also returned, having been under witness protection since his prison stabbing.

Going forward, there are a couple of differences between Murdock's initial stint in prison and his most recent arrest. First, Matt Murdock is not the one being arrested in Zdarsky's run. Instead, Daredevil is turning himself in to the authorities anonymously, being tried for his actions rather than Murdock's. Second, Daredevil is currently turning himself in, rather than being hunted down and arrested.  Murdock is taking responsibility for his mistakes instead of waiting for those mistakes to haunt him later on.

Considering the differing circumstances behind Murdock's arrests, it will be fascinating to see how Zdarsky approaches Daredevil's legal battle in his current run. Bendis and Brubaker certainly put Murdock through the ringer -- but he still managed to come out on top.
