The Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, is set hundreds of years before the events of the hit fantasy series and will center on the titular House Targaryen, who WarnerMedia CEO describes as being the most chaotic in Westeros.

In a recent interview, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar briefly discussed the upcoming series, stating, "I'm just so excited because the world that exists in Westeros and the broader landscape and the characters." Then, teasing the new set of characters, Kilar said, "The Targaryens are about as crazy as they get. It’s literally the essence of good drama."

Some of House of the Dragon's new characters include Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D'Arcy, the king's first-born child; Prince Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, the younger brother to King Viserys and heir to the throne, and many more who were revealed in recently released character descriptions from HBO.

The series is based on George R.R. Martin's novel, Fire and Blood, released in 2018. The book took content originally intended for The World of Ice and Fire companion book and details the history of House Targaryen, starting from the Targaryen conquest of Westeros and ending with the aftermath of the war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Created by George R.R. Martin, Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Emma D'Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower and Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole. The series is expected to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2022.
