House of the Dragon will "expand" its world setting in Season 2 as Westeros prepares for a dragon-filled civil war between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower.

Showrunner Ryan Condal says that the HBO Max hit will give fans a look at parts of Westeros well beyond the confines of King's Landing, Dragonstone and Driftmark when it returns for Season 2. "Just as the original Game of Thrones grew in scope and expanse as it went, so, too, will ours," Condal told Variety, adding, "I think those will continue to be the home bases for the show. But a war is coming that requires allegiances from different kingdoms and armies all over the map of Westeros."

Speaking about plans for the show's second season, the writer and producer said House of the Dragon fans can expect to see the series grow in scale with Condal explaining there was "plenty of scope" to explore the Targaryen's world. "There are definitely many more new worlds to come, and new worlds that you haven’t necessarily seen in the original show, either," he added.

The House of the Dragon showrunner has been teasing more exciting things for when the show returns to the small screen, with Condal promising more large-scale action and spectacle. He explained that the show "will get to the spectacle" that fans expect in its next season, saying he and his team had to build their world and characters before the all out mayhem of war hit the show. "You have to understand these people’s complexities before they’re thrown into war.," Condal explained. "Series two will hit the rhythms people came to expect from the middle run of Game of Thrones, but it will have been earned, and viewers will feel the tragedies because we put the work in."

George R.R. Martin's Works

House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the birth of Game of Throne's Daenerys Targaryen, and the events across the series aims to explore the fall of House Targaryen and its legendary dragons. HBO's show, like its predecessor, is adapted from the work of George R.R. Martin and his novel, Fire and Blood, centered on the Targaryen dynasty.

The events and characters introduced in Martin's historical novel Fire and Blood have been translated and tweaked for a new audience on the small screen, though the show sticks to much of what has been penned by the author about the Targaryen's family history, including the bloody civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

House of the Dragon Season 1 is available for streaming on HBO Max.
