Method acting has seen some bad press in recent years, but House of the Dragon's Ewan Mitchell admits to employing the technique in his own work on set.

In an interview with The Face, Mitchell, who plays Aemond "One-Eye" Targaryen in HBO's House of the Dragon, was asked to share a funny story from filming the show, to which he answered, "I’m quite serious, probably way too much. I think method acting gets a bad rap nowadays, but if you consider it [in relation to] people’s time, it’s certainly not a bad thing," he said. "For Aemond, I definitely stayed in a state of character, because his temperature is so high, and I’m quite calm and collected. So instead of fluctuating between the two, I’d find a middle ground that I could relax into between takes. For me, it made it that little bit more work efficient."

Several high-profile actors have gone on record this year to voice their concerns about method acting, including Mads Mikkelson and Will Poulter. The comments were spurred by stories from the set of Morbius, in which Jared Leto used the method technique in order to portray the titular Michael Morbius. This included using his character's crutches to traverse the set, which made Leto's bathroom breaks agonizingly long, to the point where production staff had to insist he use a wheelchair instead, as a compromise. Morbius was not even Leto's first time making headlines with his excessive employment of the method, having sent dead rats and allegedly used condoms to his cast mates on the set of 2016's Suicide Squad.

Aemond Targaryen Behind the Scenes

Mitchell has fortunately managed to avoid such controversy, with the extent of his method being rooted in how he carried himself between takes. His co-star Elliot Grihault, who played Lucerys Velaryon, even shared a picture of himself with Mitchell, extolling his kindness and professionalism.

"Although Aemond may look quite menacing on TV, Ewan Mitchell has the kindest soul and is an absolute thrill to work with," Grihault wrote. "Watching him snap from the incredibly caring Ewan to the extremely intimidating Aemond allowed me to be truly immersed in the scenes I had with him!"

House of the Dragon is available for streaming on HBO Max.
