Marvel was just getting back into the event game when House Of M, by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Olivier Coipel, hit. Billed as the first crossover between the New Avengers and the Astonishing X-Men, it would see both teams come together to figure out what to do with Scarlet Witch and would just get wilder from there.

Alternate universes were created, mutant de-powered, and heroes were changed forever. House Of M has its ups and downs but one thing that can't be doubted is the impact it had on things. For years afterward, many characters were never the same.

8 It Inspired Captain Marvel To Get Serious About Being A Superhero Again

The alternate reality created by Scarlet Witch had a lot of differences and one of them was Carol Danvers, the future Captain Marvel, and her place in the world. As Ms. Marvel, Carol was the biggest superhero on the planet, a rare human who was completely beloved by the mutant populace. This life, and the memories of it, would spur Carol on to bigger and better things after it had ended.

After getting a taste of what it was like to be the biggest hero around, Carol would work harder than ever to remake herself, trying to become the type of hero she had once been. This would eventually lead her to becoming Captain Marvel and taking her place at the forefront of the Marvel Universe.

7 Hawkeye Would Return To Life

House Of M spun out of Avengers Disassembled, when Scarlet Witch attacked the team after she learned the truth about her twin children. Several Avengers would lose their lives in the battle against Scarlet Witch, including longtime Avenger Hawkeye, who had joined the team with Scarlet Witch had years before. It would be revealed that he was alive in the House Of M world, helping the human resistance against the House of M.

Eventually being given his memory back, he would participate in the final battle against Scarlet Witch and confront her. It looked like she just killed him again but once the fight was over, his costume was found at Avengers Mansion, where he died. It would be a bit before fans saw him again but he would eventually return to the Avengers after Civil War.

6 Layla Miller Would Crossover To The Regular Marvel Universe

Layla Miller was introduced as the deus ex machina of the middle section of the story. Her mutant powers allowed her to bring back people's memories of the old world and she helped Wolverine assemble the X-Men and Avengers in order to take the fight to Scarlet Witch and the House of M. After the dust settled, she would end up hanging out with X-Factor.

Miller became a huge part of X-Factor, eventually getting aged up to become an older adult after years of being held in an alternate timeline. She would go on to marry Jamie Madrox and have a kid with him.

5 Wolverine Would Get His Memories Back

Wolverine is the best there is at what he does and in House Of M, that was to reassemble the heroes. He was the only member of the Avengers and X-Men to keep his memory when he woke up in the new world and immediately began hunting down his friends. His discovery of Layla Miller made the rest possible and Wolverine was probably the most important hero in the story - without him, nothing would have changed.

After getting back to the real world, Wolverine got lucky in that not only did he keep his powers but he also got all of his memories back. This was a huge change for the mutant and would play into his future adventures, as he learned more about his life than ever before.

4 Magneto And Professor X Were Both De-Powered And Disappeared

Magneto Trusts Professor X

Magneto and Professor X's relationship has always been complex but their fates at the end of House Of M weren't. In the new world created by Scarlet Witch, Magneto was the leader of the world and Professor X was dead. At first, everyone thought Magneto was behind the whole thing but the truth was revealed during the final battle.

Afterwards, Magneto and Professor X were nowhere to be found. Both would show up eventually but they would both be powerless. Xavier's ability to walk had been restored, which was good for him. Both would eventually regain their powers but, for a while, they took a time out from their tumultuous lives.

3 Scarlet Witch Was De-Powered And Erased Her Own Memory

Scarlet Witch was public enemy number one after House Of M for a lot of reasons. De-powered mutants weren't happy with her, her friends in the Avengers weren't either, and she had nowhere to go anymore. When things went back to normal, she would disappear off the face of the Earth for a time, living in an Eastern European village with no memory of her previous life or the powers that had changed the world.

Eventually, Hawkeye would find her but instead of taking revenge against her, he left her to live a quiet life. She'd eventually come back into the spotlight because of an ill-fated alliance with Doctor Doom, regaining her powers and memory. This would lead her back to the Avengers, where she would eventually help to re-power the mutant race.

2 Quicksilver Would Steal Terrigen Crystals In An Attempt To Give Mutants Back Their Powers

The man behind House Of M, Quicksilver was the one whose sister change the world. It took time for everyone to realize this but when they did, he fought hard against them, until Magneto got a hold of him and almost killed him. This spurred on Scarlet Witch to de-power the mutant race, in order to save him and hurt their father. Quicksilver would lose his powers as well and wouldn't take it very well.

Taken into Attilan because of his connection with his ex-wife Crystal, Quicksilver stole the Terrigen crystals and learned they could give mutants back some of their powers. This whole thing backfired on him, though, and he would bum around the Marvel Universe for years before getting his powers back and being forgiven by his friends in the Avengers for his actions.

1 Scarlet Witch Destroyed The Mutant Race For Years To Come

Wanda yelling at Magneto and saying No More Mutants.

The biggest consequence of House Of M came from three simple words: "No more mutants." Scarlet Witch uttered these words and suddenly, out of millions of mutants, only hundreds had their powers. Some would die without their powers, others' lives would never be the same again. Regardless of what happened, the once waxing mutant race was almost completely destroyed and their power broken for years to come.

The Xavier Institute would become a reservation for the mutant race, vulnerable to attack from their greatest foes. This would drive them to San Francisco, where they would start their own mutant island, Utopia, after an attack by Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers. It would be years before mutants would recover, a process that is still ongoing.
