Moana Gets an Honest Trailer

Since “Moana” currently enjoys a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the team at Screen Junkies had their work cut out for them in creating an “Honest Trailer” for the film. They were up for the task, however, finding humor in the movie’s Disney tropes, musical numbers and treatment of Polynesian culture.

As the trailer says, “Enjoy the highest honor a culture can receive these days: having your traditions commodified by the Disney corporation!”

The video also invites audiences to follow along “in a journey that pokes fun at all of Disney’s usual tropes, while at the same time being 100% guilty of them.” It teases Moana’s lack of a character arc, since she begins the film as “a strong, determined young woman who won’t stop until she gets the job done,” and, “after 90 minutes of adventure, becomes…a strong, determined young woman who won’t stop until she gets the job done.”

The Honest Trailers team then mocks the movie’s musical numbers, with parodies like “I Can do Anything, Except Sing” (parody of “You’re Welcome”) and “It’s an Off-Brand ‘Let It Go'” (parody of “How Far I’ll Go”).

“Moana” is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
