The following contains spoilers from Halcyon Legacy #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

There are quite a few comedic pirates in the media. Captain Hook and Mr. Smee are the butt of Peter Pan's success in every remake of the classic characters. More recently, Taika Waititi's Our Flag Means Death comedy is a hoot, and of course, Pirates of the Caribbean's Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the most hilarious characters out there. Even Star Wars has its own version of a comedic pirate. His name was Hondo Ohnaka.

Hondo first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars during the Season 1 episode "Dooku Captured." In that episode, his sarcasm and penchant for switching sides immediately made it clear that he would provide some comedic relief for The Clone Wars. He continued to appear throughout the series, and since then, he's appeared in several different animated projects and quite a few comic books. His most recent appearance was in Halcyon Legacy #4 (by Ethan Sacks, Will Sliney, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC's Joe Sabino).

Hondo Ohnaka

Based on Disney's expensive Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser adventure, the Halcyon Legacy comic series details the extensive history of the famous Halcyon ship. To do so, the series deploys a framing device. The cruiser was transporting a Resistance spy named Shorr Komrrin, but a pirate named Crimson Jack wanted to capture and turn the spy over to the First Order for a reward. While running from the pirate, a droid called D3-09 has been telling Komrrin's granddaughter stories about the Halcyon's past to distract her and give her courage.

So far, the droid has told stories about High Republic Jedi Nib Assek and Burryaga Agaburry, the bounty hunter Aurra Sing and a confrontation between Anakin Skywalker and Asajj Ventress. Halcyon Legacy #4, "The Heist on the Halcyon," sees D3-09 tell a story about Hondo Ohnaka, Maz Kanata, and Lando Calrissian.

The whole thing was about pulling a heist on a General Kardan. The Imperial had commandeered the Halcyon during the Galactic Civil War and was using it as his personal cruiser. To make things worse, he had made a hobby of illegally taking stolen property as trophies. So, the Hondo, Maz, and Lando trio set out to steal something from him while exposing his crimes.

By the end of the heist, Maz, who was in charge of the operation, reclaimed a curio chest made of Wroshyr wood. It had been given to her by a Wookiee years before, and she would go on to keep Luke's lightsaber in it. Meanwhile, Hondo claimed he was a legitimate businessman, and Calrissian made off with a boat-load of credits. The point, however, was that some clever thinking (even by some comedic pirates) could easily outwit the Empire, and D3-09 said as much.

The funny thing is that heist was one of Hondo's simpler adventures. During The Clone Wars, he captured Count Dooku, Anakin, and Obi-Wan at the same time. The idea was to sell the Count to the Republic and the Jedi to the Separatists, but by the end, he was lucky to make it out with his life. Later in the war, he captured Ahsoka but ended up helping her escape from General Grievous. He also had run-ins with Maul and Savage Opress. Years later, in Star Wars Rebels, he made friends with Ezra Bridger and even fought against the Empire and First Order while still maintaining his pirate lifestyle.

A good way to sum up Hondo would be by relating him to Captain Jack Sparrow. Neither were particularly skillful pirates and always found themselves in the worst possible circumstances. Yet, somehow, they always found a way to come out on top. Fans wanted to see his debut in Kenobi, but it didn't happen. Perhaps Lucasfilm and Disney+ are saving him for a future season of Star Wars: Andor. After all, a lot of that series will be about spies and what happens in the galaxy's underworld. If and when he makes his live-action debut, Hondo Ohnaka will always be the most hilarious pirate in Star Wars.
