Sherlock's writers left viewers with quite the cliffhanger at the end of the second season, as Holmes took the rap for Moriarty's crimes and seemingly killed himself by jumping off a building. But, as fans know by now, he's not dead. What happened? How'd he make it? And how will his friends, colleagues and enemies take his presumed reappearance in the upcoming third season?

The below mini-episode, called "Many Happy Returns," doesn't offer too many answers, but it is a nice look at the eccentric detective's impending return to London.

Creators and producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss wrote the seven-minute preview for the popular BBC series. The video finds Rupert Graves' Inspector Lestrade doing his best to convince himself and others that Sherlock is not still alive before visiting Martin Freeman's John Watson. Pieces of Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes pop up throughout the clip, but he makes a more complete appearance thanks to a video message at the end.

Premiering Jan. 1 in the United Kingdom on BBC One and Jan. 19 in the United States on PBS, Sherlock‘s third season features three 90-minute episodes: “The Empty Hearse,” “The Sign of Three” and “His Last Vow.”
