While Harry Potter games are not a new concept, the announcement of Hogwarts Legacy spurred unprecedented excitement in fans. Not only will the game feature the treasured world and magic system, but it's described by the creators as "an immersive, open-world, action role-playing game set in the 1800s wizarding world, which puts players at the centre of their own adventure." This sets a whole new standard for Harry Potter games. Hogwarts Legacy is set to be published by Portkey Games, a Warner Bros. label, and developed by Avalanche Software. Despite ongoing controversies surrounding author J.K. Rowling, the majority of fans are thrilled.

As the 2023 release date nears, more details have emerged about the game's features, which include class attendance, spell casting, and even the ability to tame and mount magical creatures seen in the Harry Potter books. Students can even customize the Room of Requirement to fit their needs, though not much is known about this yet. However, among the game's FAQs featured on the website is one piece of news that has massively disappointed some fans -- Quidditch, the biggest broom sport in the wizarding world, will not be playable.

Hogwarts Legacy Hippogriff

With this omission, fans are justified in feeling let down by Warner Bros. In one Reddit post, user u/Dodoloco25 said, "My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined," while user u/SamuranTheSack claimed that Quidditch was "literally as important to harrys [sic] character as his wand is." In the canon of the wizarding world, Quidditch is important enough that Voldemort's Death Eaters choose the Quidditch World Cup as a target at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Fans were equally confused when the FAQ page confirmed that players will be able to ride broomsticks for travel needs and in races. They will also be able to ride flying magical creatures such as the hippogriff. Clearly, flight itself is not the issue, so what's causing Warner Bros. to hold back from including Quidditch? Will it be enough to make fans boycott the game altogether?

The player encounters a creature in Hogwarts Legacy

Some fans think they have the answer. In the same post, Reddit user u/ohsinboi pointed out that Quidditch is overall an unbalanced game, since the team's Seeker, who captures the Golden Snitch, almost always wins the game with the special ball being worth 150 points. No matter how well a team plays, it is almost impossible to win unless their Seeker beats out the other. Some fans have taken a more aggressive stance on the subject, claiming that the sport is poorly designed overall.

All in all, Hogwarts Legacy is shaping up to be a massive game with tons of potential. The idea of an open-world game set in the wizarding world, even if it does not include playable Quidditch, is too exciting to ignore. Whether fans are still angry about Warner Bros.' omission come release is yet to be seen, but with the wide variety of features promised in the game's trailer, even disappointed fans are sure to find other elements to explore with vigor.

Hogwarts Legacy is set to release on Feb. 10, 2023, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
