Gaming forum ResetEra has banned the discussion of Hogwarts Legacy.

On ResetEra's official website, the gaming forum announced its ban on promoting and discussing the upcoming Harry Potter title. Much of the controversy surrounding Hogwarts Legacy stems from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's past controversial statements regarding the transgender community. ResetEra labels Rowling a "bigot" who uses her position "as a wealthy and famous individual, for legislation that will hurt trans people." As a result, "the mod team has decided to expand our prior ban on promotion for the Hogwarts game to include the game itself. There will be no OT and no discussion of this game," the forum's statement reads.

Hogwarts Legacy's Controversy

Despite ResetEra forbidding mentions of Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Bros. Games previously confirmed that Rowling played no role in developing the open-world game. Furthermore, Hogwarts Legacy even allows players to customize a transgender student. However, that did not stop many Steam users from flooding the title's pre-sale page with inflammatory tags like "villain protagonist," "World War II" and "capitalism." "Transphobia" is the top tag for Hogwarts Legacy, with others being "racism," "psychological horror" and "antisemitism."

Even if Hogwarts Legacy has faced backlash, the Harry Potter game climbed the bestsellers chart for Steam and PlayStation 5. On Steam, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive remains higher in revenue as it is a free-to-play title with microtransactions. As for Amazon's best-selling PlayStation 5 games, Hogwarts Legacy takes the top spot, with Sonic Frontiers and the upcoming Dead Space remake falling behind. For Xbox Series X|S, Hogwarts Legacy comes second to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
