Veep and The Tomorrow War star Sam Richardson will appear in Hocus Pocus 2.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Richardson is in final negotiations for a role in Disney+'s Hocus Pocus sequel and will appear alongside original stars of the 1993 film, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy.

Richardson most recently appeared in Amazon Prime Video's action movie The Tomorrow War starring Chris Pratt. His recent writing credits include Ted Lasso and horror-comedy Werewolves Within, and he will also co-star with Pratt once again for the Universal film, Stranded Asset, for which he also serves as a writer. The specifics of his Hocus Pocus role have not yet been confirmed.

The Hocus Pocus sequel was announced in early 2020, with Midler, Parker and Najimy set to reprise their roles as Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson, respectively. Hocus Pocus will be directed by Anne Fletcher and is slated to arrive on Disney+ in 2022. The script will be written by Jen D'Angelo (Workaholics) and, according to Midler, all three Sanderson sister actors have seen and approved of the script outline.

"They presented us with an outline, and after we picked ourselves up off the floor, because it's been 27 years, we looked at it and I think all of us agreed that it was pretty great," Midler said. While the original Hocus Pocus director, Adam Shankman, will not returning a directorial capacity, he will be assisting the film as an executive producer.

"As heartbroken as I am that I won’t be able to direct my friends Bette, Sarah Jessica and Kathy in what is sure to be nothing short of a major event for Disney+ due to scheduling conflicts, I couldn’t be more pleased to be handing over the reins to Anne, who has brought so much laughter and joy into people’s lives with her previous work," Shankman said. "I am still grateful and proud to help shepherd this ingenious project as executive producer alongside producer Lynn Harris, whom I have loved and admired as a colleague and friend since she helped get me the job choreographing Boogie Nights."

Originally released in 1993, Hocus Pocus follows a disgruntled high schooler and his little sister who move from Los Angeles, CA to Salem, MA right in time for Halloween. However, after they accidentally awaken the evil Sanderson sisters 300 years after they were hanged, they must fight to survive the night and stop the witches from stealing the youth from all the children in Salem. The film quickly became a cult classic and even had a successful theatrical re-release in 2020.
