Dwayne Johnson may be done working on the main Fast & Furious movies, but that won't prevent him from building out his Hobbs & Shaw spinoff series.

Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions President and producer Hiram Garcia spoke with Collider about the developing Hobbs & Shaw 2. “At the moment we’re trying to figure out what that sequel is going to be, but we have some very big ideas," Garcia said. He also confirmed The Rock won't reprise his role as Luke Hobbs for Fast & Furious 10 and 11, echoing the latter's comments during an interview he gave in July.

After his much-reported conflict with Vin Diesel during filming on 2017's The Fate of the Furious, Johnson left the central Fast Saga to star in 2019's Hobbs & Shaw spinoff. The duo publicly ended their feud around the time Hobbs & Shaw hit theaters, with Johnson teasing his return for the last two Fast & Furious movies. However, he later backtracked on this while responding to Diesel's recent claim that their dispute stemmed from him trying to improve The Rock's acting through "tough love."

“After filming Fast 8 DJ made the clear decision to close the Fast & Furious chapter for all the evident reasons. He wished them all well and shifted our focus on to other story telling avenues," Garcia said. "So while he will not be in F10 or F11, that won’t in any way interfere with our Hobbs plans. Obviously all these characters exist in the Fast universe and we love to see all aspects of that universe thrive and succeed. We just have specific plans for what we want to do with the Hobbs character and I think the fans are going to love it! We’re working to deliver something very unique and fresh and we know the studio is eager for us to get into it ASAP!”

Directed by David Leitch, Hobbs & Shaw unites former DSS agent Hobbs with the mercenary Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) on a mission to prevent a cyber-terrorist organization from getting ahold of a super-virus that Deckard's sister Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby), an MI6 agent, steals to keep safe. The film grossed $760 million at the box office and earned mixed to positive reviews.

A year after he announced the sequel in March 2020, Johnson revealed Hobbs & Shaw 2 is being penned by Chris Morgan, who also wrote the first movie. Beyond that, though, details are being kept under-wraps for the time being.
