WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, in theaters now.
Hobbs & Shaw is among the most outrageous films of the year, in the best possible way, with an ending that matches the bombastic tone of everything that came before it. The heroes force a climactic battle with the villainous Brixton (Idris Elba) and his mercenary army over the fate of a super-virus hidden within MI6 agent Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby).
Despite the odds being against them, Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) save the world and, in the process, reunite their families. But that doesn’t mean they've ended the threat posed by Eteon, the organization backing Brixton.
THE BATTLE OF SAMOA
Having saved Deckard's sister Hattie and stolen the device necessary to draw the smart virus out of her system before it kills her, Hobbs and Shaw have to figure out where to make their last stand against Brixton and his army. Hobbs brings them to the home of his family in Samoa, where he's forced to bury the hatch with his siblings years after turning his criminal father over to the authorities. After some prodding from their mother, Hobbs is able to convince his family to work alongside him to save the world -- even if they don't have any modern weaponry.
Hattie is able to hack the technology used by Brixton's mercenaries and remove their ability to use guns for six minutes. That gives Hobbs and his family a window in which they can turn their home into a veritable fortress. They even use ancestral weaponry to beat back the invading force. Even when Brixton captures Hattie, Hobbs and his family are able to use multiple cars to weigh down Brixton's helicopter and force it to crash -- although that brings the truck carrying Hobbs and Shaw down with it.
THE BEACH BRAWL
Finally working in tandem instead of just barely tolerating one another, Hobbs and Shaw confront Brixton during a storm on a beach, where they're able to overwhelm Brixton and his cybernetic adjustments. They hold back the soldier long enough for Hattie to successfully have the virus extracted from her body. When it becomes apparent Brixton has lost the battle and won't be able to secure the virus, his controllers at Eteon deactivate his cybernetics, seemingly killing him.
Although they've saved the world, a representative of Eteon taunts Hobbs and Shaw through the dying helicopter. The organization promises to return, setting up Eteon as an overarching villain for the series. The voice on the other line even implies they've confronted Hobbs in the past, and will do so again.
The ending of the film, like the beginning, shows Hobbs and Shaw in action. But unlike the opening, in which they couldn't be more different, both men are now trying to achieve the same goal: repairing their familial relationships.
Hobbs brings his daughter to Samoa, where, she meets her extended family. The reveal of the Hobbs family owning a world-renowned car shop opens the possibility they will join Hobbs on his missions to protect the world. Meanwhile, Shaw and Hattie visit their mother, Madeline Shaw (Helen Mirren), in prison. She's overjoyed that two of her children have buried the hatchet. The three then decide to work together to break her out of prison.
However, the threat of Eteon isn't resolved by the end of the film. The mysterious organization that developed the super-virus wanted to unleash it in an attempt to cull the "weak." It's unlikely the group would simply stop trying to wipe out humanity just because its initial plan didn't succeed.
If there is sequel, it's likely Eteon will threaten Hobbs and Shaw again. It's important to remember Eteon initially wanted to recruit Hobbs and Shaw to their side rather than kill them. Now that they've decided to go all out on trying to kill them, there's no limit to what Eteon could do in the future of the franchise.
Directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2) from a script by longtime Fast & Furious veteran Chris Morgan, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw stars Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby.
