In an interview with Etalk, Eddie Murphy confirmed that he would love to play Donkey in a potential Shrek 5 movie (via Deadline). Unfortunately, for a movie that was announced in 2016, Dreamworks Animation has failed to yet provide a definite date for the release of this very much-awaited film.

Shrek is one of the most beloved franchises in the industry, and the thousands of memes about these movies around the internet totally confirm it. Such a hilarious movie obviously provides some of the funniest and most interesting memes out there.

9 Donkey's Name Is Very Unoriginal

A funny thing about the Shrek franchise is that Donkey, Shrek's optimistic and upbeat sidekick, has the least original name in the world. In fact, it isn't a name at all, but the name of his species. This in a way makes sense since Shrek probably would just call him Donkey.

It's hilarious to think about a person trying to remember this character's name since it technically doesn't have one. Probably more than one person has been in this absurd prerogative. Maybe, at some point, the Shrek franchise will give Donkey a more creative name.

8 Pinocchio Isn't The Best DJ

Pinocchio is one of Shrek's colorful fairytale characters and one of his usual companions in his many different adventures. Because this character is incredibly hilarious, it has turned into one of the people's most beloved characters from the Shrek franchise.

There's no doubt everyone can relate to going to a party with a terrible DJ. Especially since, in this time and age, a lot of people believe being a DJ is an easy job that anyone can do. This scene with Pinocchio perfectly describes this sort of situation in a hilarious way.

7 Shrek Is Better Than Thanos

One of the most common memes around the internet is this image of Shrek with his hand glowing, which has inspired many uproarious jokes. The scene isn't even a part of the movie, but a fan quickly related it to Thanos's Infinity Gauntlet, which is supposed to be a more imposing and solemn scene.

Shrek has already transcended internet culture and this image of one of the many inside jokes about these movies. Since the Infinity Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been one of the biggest cultural phenomenons of the last few years, Thanos's Gaunlet became truly iconic. This led to multiple comparisons to other less epic pieces of media, including this image of Shrek, which is already parodying a scene in Doctor Who.

6 No One Should Enter Shrek's Swamp

The swamp is Shrek's precious home, and he spends most of the first movie trying to get it back. Since this character loves his privacy, he scares away anyone who dares to get close to his swamp. Throughout the movies, Shrek proves to be a great warrior, which is why it would a very bad idea to try to invade his swamp.

Since Shrek is very vocal about protecting his swamp, the overprotectiveness of his home has become a common joke for fans of this franchise. This template usually illustrates the dumbest thing someone can do, and it's safe to say invading Shrek's swamp is a very dumb idea.

5 Everyone Knows Shrek 2 Is The Best Shrek Movie

Even though most people can agree that sequels aren't usually as good as the previous movies of a series, Shrek defies this common rule. While all Shrek movies are amazing, the second one has become a true fan favorite among all the films and shorts in the Shrek franchise. It's so good that even someone stealing a house would stay to watch it.

While Shrek is already hilarious and heartwarming, Shrek 2 took it to the next level. The film added some new interesting characters in an organic way, which gave way to more absurd and colorful scenes that have become classics of animated films.

4 Nothing Is More Heartwarming Than Shrek

Since the first Shrek premiered in 2001, this franchise has become one of people's favorite animated movies in history. The reason behind this is that these films managed to create the perfect balance between truly comical sequences and a heartwarming and uplifting story.

The Shrek films include reflective and sweet moments, such as Shrek and Fiona falling in love, and the rocky friendship between Shrek and Donkey. These films are a perfect comfort watch that will keep people as warm as winter clothing would.

3 Shrek's Soundtrack Is Still A Hit

One of the most amazing parts of the Shrek franchise is its nag to select the best songs for the best moments. From the Fairy Grandmother's performance of "Holding Out For A Hero," to Shrek's 2 opening to "Accidentally in Love," to the beginning of Shrek with "All-Star," the Shrek movies are full of bangers that will make people think of iconic scenes.

One of the most iconic scenes in animated movies is Shrek opening the door of his house with the popular Smash Mouth song. This meme creates an excellent pun with this moment and the lyrics of the song, which as everyone knows starts with "Somebody."

2 Shrek Wasn't Always Wholesome

While the ultimate message in Shrek is that appearances don't matter as much as people's personalities, the film has no qualms about making fun of how other characters look, such as Lord Farquaad. This villainous figure is very short and has a funny haircut, which has made him a laughingstock.

However, there's no doubt Lord Farquaad deserves the mockery. Shrek may be an ogre, but he's also a good person, who's incredibly loyal, so the fact that he's green matters very little. On the other hand, Lord Farquaad is a tyrannical dictator who doesn't care who he hurts to become king.

1 Everyone Is Waiting For The Fifth Installment

The Shrek franchise is becoming one of the most prolific animate films. It already has four movies in the main storyline and two in the Puss in Boots series. However, the fourth Shrek movie was released in 2010, and people have been waiting for thirteen years for a fifth one.

While in 2016 it was announced that there will be a fifth installment of this series, fans haven't gotten the film yet. The date keeps being pushed back and there isn't yet a definite one. Hopefully, the fandom will finally get this movie somewhere in 2023, as they deserve.
