Injustice 2 may have already been out for a while, but the community continues to thrive. With the impending release of Hellboy as the final character in the Fighter Pack 2 DLC and the announcement of who will accompany The Atom in the upcoming final Fighter Pack 3 set to be made at the upcoming ELEAGUE World Championship finals, the community is thriving with no end in sight. The game continues to receive regular updates, and will likely get a few events in the coming weeks to celebrate the anticipated release of Justice League, much like was done Wonder Woman’s debut and the season premiere of the Arrowverse family of shows.

Between the rich history of the universe, as established in both games and the tie-in comic book that followed, there’s plenty of source material to poke fun at. Character designs, wacky one-liners or just the inherent ridiculousness of the plot (and let’s be honest, when you get down to brass tacks, Injustice 2 is pretty ridiculous), there’s plenty to take a shot at. We’ve compiled our favorite funny images about Netherrealm Studios and DC Comics’ premiere fighting game. Here are 15 incredible Injustice 2 memes to keep you laughing until Injustice 3.

15 BLUE BEETLE’S BIGGEST FAN

That we got a Blue Beetle in Injustice 2 alone is pretty shocking. The character has been a fan favorite for a long while, especially the Jaime Reyes interpretation of the character, but the comics have never lasted long for Jaime. The most recent DC Rebirth run of the character, finally pairing him with the classic Beetle Ted Kord, is among the first to be on the chopping block.

But Blue Beetle has a strange character power, which turns his hands into blades. And while it’s a great power, opening up a lot of combo potential, you can’t deny that it would make life more complicated if his hands were stuck like that. This excellent meme we found brings that to the forefront, comparing it to Frank Ippolito’s excellent real-life Lego minifig costume from Comic-Con 2016.

14 THE COST OF BATTLE

The modern age of gaming is based on the prospect of downloadable content to extend both the longevity of the game and the profits earned over their life. Netherrealm has taken this to heart. After experimenting with adding DLC characters in 2009’s Mortal Kombat and 2011’s Injustice: Gods Among Us, both Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2 transitioned to DLC packs for multiple fighters.

In the long run, Injustice 2 does give you a lot of bang for your buck. A total of nine DLC characters spread across three Fighter Packs has added a lifespan to the game that it wouldn’t enjoy otherwise, especially with incredible additions such as Sub-Zero and Hellboy. It remains to be seen what the rest of the roster will be, though, with the final two DLC characters set to be announced early November.

13 GUARDIAN OF THE REALMS

In celebration of a stunning 25 years of Mortal Kombat, Netherrealm added in their own God of Thunder, Raiden, as a DLC character for Injustice 2. Much like his fellow Kombatant Sub-Zero, Raiden makes for an interesting addition as he plays more like a Mortal Kombat character than an Injustice one. He’s fast, fluid, and his Teleport and Human Torpedo moves make him an incredibly versatile addition to the roster.

Raiden’s story doesn’t appear to tie-in much with his Mortal Kombat one. Mortal Kombat X’s stinger saw the return of Dark Raiden, a personality that emerged following his supposed death in 2004’s Mortal Kombat: Deception. Though the character is referenced in the Injustice 2 shaders, it’s not the Raiden we see in the game. Maybe we’ve got it backward, though, and exposure to the vicious Regime inspired Raiden’s darker side?

12 OBI-WAN WOULD KNOW

Injustice 2 has some truly absurd modifiers. Sawblades that juggle you in the air, cats that steal your super meter, or even unseen Kombatants attacking you from off-screen. The modifiers are typically most prevalent in the game’s constantly shifting Multiverse mode, where you face various challenges in hopes of receiving different rewards, ranging from gear pieces to new color shaders for your character to wear.

One you most likely will face is Powerful High Ground, wherein the ground is constantly tilting. Whichever fighter is on the highest plane receives a fairly significant damage buff, but one that vanishes the second they are lower than their opponent. A Star Wars reference, perhaps? After all, Star Wars has typically shown that whomever has the high ground is in the superior position. Well, unless you’re Darth Maul.

11 JOKER-LEDGER-LETO-JOKER

Japanese comedian/musician Pikotaro became an Internet sensation in 2016 with the most absurd song you’d ever heard, PPAP or Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen. There’s really not much else to say about the song, that’s the entire gag: he combined writing instruments and fruit and became an Internet celebrity for a few months.

The gag was still pretty relevant when Injustice 2 surprised players with the announcement that The Joker would be playable, despite this universe’s Joker being decidedly dead. Notable is the twist on the design. While both versions of Injustice’s Joker erred toward a more classic design, the updated appearance for Injustice 2 is pretty clearly an amalgamation of the wildly popular Heath Ledger iteration and the less popular but more current Jared Leto version of the character.

10 THE FAN’S PLIGHT

Injustice 2 players have had it pretty rough. Netherrealm dropped the first trailer out of nowhere, with just enough information to get the crowd hyped up. Building to the game’s eventual release, fans were clamoring for more information. Who would be on the roster? How would the new gear system work? How were previously dead characters appearing as playable?

Even after the game released, news drums up interest. The reveal of the first three DLC Fighter Pack characters built hype with the reveals of Red Hood, Starfire and Sub-Zero, while Fighter Pack 2 only made the wait worse with the additions of Raiden, Black Manta and surprise addition Hellboy. In fact, with every promise of a new release, the fandom only grew hungrier for more!

9 PURE JOY

There wasn’t a lot of buzz about Injustice 2 before it released. Typically an upcoming game will begin to take shape as news leaks out and information is teased, and the reveal isn’t that much of a surprise when it drops. But Injustice 2 seemed to come out of nowhere, with a teaser trailer that only hinted at the scope of what the game would contain.

The ongoing feud between Dark Knight and Man of Steel, the in-game debut of Supergirl, the incredible gear system and the oncoming threat of Brainiac. Much like the clip of Shia LaBeouf watching his own movies at a theater, fans went through a wide range of emotions watching that first trailer, an emotional high that continued until the game was finally put into their grabby hands.

8 JUST BUILD A SNOWMAN

Premiere skins made their debut in Injustice 2 and really shook up the character roster. Characters who typically wouldn’t get a chance in the game got a shot thanks to conversions of their existing roster. Characters like Mr. Freeze, Vixen and Jay Garrick got to make their fighting game debuts without stealing spots from similar characters thanks to this.

While the characters are only changed on a relatively base level, receiving new skins and retaining the same move sets, they do receive new lines of dialogue. On the surface, you may not notice this at first, but it sticks out like a sore thumb when the premiere and DLC characters have to work with existing lines for interactions. Fortunately, the developers thought of this and managed to create a few fun interactions, such as this one involving Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, and Captain Cold.

7 SKILL VS. SCRUB

The Flash doesn’t play like you’d expect in Injustice 2. He moves slower than you’d think, but the potential is there. The ability to chain combos and use abilities that highlight the character's speed to pull off incredible parries and slow time itself means that with the right amount of time and dedication, a Flash player could pull it off.

And then there’s Deadshot. Filling the same role as Deathstroke in the original Injustice, Deadshot’s guns are lethal in the hands of the right player. Able to lay down a suppressive fire in a variety of directions, his later abilities only make it worse. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been training with your character of choice, the right Deadshot player can lock you down on the opposite side of the screen and keep you pinned down for as long as he or she wants.

6 THE BETTER STORY

DC’s cinematic universe has been a bit of a trainwreck. Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were met with a range of poor reviews amid backstage drama. Plots were paper thin and poorly developed characters barely resembled the counterparts fans wanted, a trend that was only recently turned around with Wonder Woman.

Injustice has been renowned for its story since day one, though, with the original Injustice: Gods Among Us receiving praise for its story mode and how it incorporated the DC concept of the multiverse. The story only improved with Injustice 2, which kept things confined to one world and focusing on the strained relationships between the characters. Injustice 2 doesn’t necessarily end on a happy note based on how you played it, but it does have an incredible story that keeps you engrossed to the very end and beyond.

5 MANTA STEWART

Black Manta has always had kind of a weird design. Hearkening back to his first appearance in 1967, Black Manta has always worn a tight bodysuit with a giant, bulbous helmet. Meant to thematically resemble a manta ray, the character's appearance has been the subject of much ridicule within the comic book fan community.

Is it Stewie Griffin in his costume? No, of course not, that would be stupid. But you can’t deny that the look lines up perfectly. Fortunately, Black Manta doesn’t have to look like this in your version of Injustice 2. Thanks to the implementation of the gear system, Black Manta gains a series of more incredible and more ridiculous helmets that make him look like a terrifying Final Fantasy end boss.

4 BANISHED TO NETWORK TELEVISION

Sure, Injustice 2 is renowned for its story mode, but it does fall into the same pitfalls as other DC Comics properties. For example, what exactly do you do with Superman when you beat him? Injustice 2 established that he was held inside a prison cell constantly flashed with red sunlight so he had no powers. Naturally, he escapes at least once and almost escapes a second time if the tie-in comic is taken into consideration.

There’s always the option of sending him to the Arrowverse, where the stories are still good but nowhere on the level of Injustice 2’s story. There is something of a precedent for this, too, with Stephen Amell’s Arrow turning up in the first Injustice as a DLC skin with Amell voicing the character. Will the Arrowverse characters turn up in Injustice 2 as well? So far Netherrealm has been mum, but time will tell.

3 TOTAL INJUSTICE

There were a lot of toy lines in the 1990s, thanks to the advent of superhero cartoons such as Spider-Man and Batman: The Animated Series. But in the mid-'90s, DC tried out another line: Total Justice. The line had a fairly simple gimmick, featuring popular DC Comics characters with snap on bits of armor and weaponry in anticipation of a battle with Darkseid.

Sound familiar? It does bear a strong resemblance to the gear system, though Injustice 2 is not nearly as clunky looking. Sure, Total Justice was an effort primarily to sell toys, but you can’t deny that those clip-on pieces of armor and stiff plastic capes have aged poorly. It’s unlikely that the gear system was inspired at all by Total Justice, but it is definitely worth remembering that DC did this gimmick once before.

2 SLOW DOWNLOAD CANARY

You’d be hard-pressed to think up something more annoying than a slow download speed for your Internet, especially with a game like Injustice 2. The game files are pretty large, and watching that download grind to a halt when all you want to do is play can be the worst feeling in the world.

So maybe you get a little angry. Maybe you get a little frustrated. And maybe you let out a pretty epic primal scream (hopefully not on Dinah’s level). Her Canary Cry in Injustice 2 is a pretty potent character ability, and her ability to parry and counter her opponents makes her a difficult yet rewarding character to learn. Just don’t take it out on your Playstation when the Internet connection drops too low to keep the fight going.

1 BATMAN REFUSES TO FIGHT

Batman fighting Superman is seemingly the crux of the Injustice universe, but not as much as you’d think. The two actually didn’t have many one-on-one encounters, as Bruce outright refused to fight his former best friend for a long while, trying to appeal to his inherent humanity instead of trying to beat a Kryptonian hand to hand.

While Injustice: Gods Among Us relied on the final battle being Superman vs. Superman, Injustice 2 couldn’t fall back on that trope as it didn’t dabble into the Multiverse as much. Instead, at the game’s conclusion, players finally got the epic Batman vs. Superman fight they were waiting for. It’s a hell of an ending no matter whose side you chose, and it was only six years in the making.
