Funimation released a new trailer Higurashi: When They Cry - SOTSU, the latest chapter in the long-running horror franchise.

The latest trailer for the show gives viewers a preview of the horror that awaits the small town of Hinamizawa in this season of the anime. The trailer also features the show's new ending theme song, Missing Promise by Jpop singer Konomi Suzuki. SOTSU is a direct sequel to 2020's Higurashi: When They Cry - GOU, and will be 15 episodes long. Passione, the animation studio that produced High School DxD Hero and the upcoming adaptation of the Mieruko-chan manga, is once again animating this season of the show.

Higurashi: When They Cry began as a visual-novel mystery game that was released for the PC in Japan in 2002. Created by a small, independent team and initially only sold at the Comiket manga convention, the game eventually built up a dedicated cult-following and has now been adapted into multiple anime and manga series.

Set in 1983, Higurashi tells the story of Keiichi Maebara, a 14-year old student who has just moved to a small town in rural Japan. After making friends with many of the girls in his class, Keiichi starts to learn about the dark history of the seemingly quiet rural town. Determined to protect his new friends and figure out what is really going on, Keiichi starts to unravel a mystery that may break him both physically and mentally. SOTSU will continue the story from the previous season of the anime, but will show events from the point of view of Satoko, one of Keiichi's new friends.

The first episode of Higurashi: When They Cry - SOTSU will premiere in Japan on July 1. Funimation has licensed the show for distribution in North America.
