A Henry Cavill-led Highlander film is apparently making steady progress.

In an interview with Collider, director Chad Stahelski shared the newest updates on the project, which is a reboot of the classic franchise about an immortal Scottish warrior. While the creative team is allegedly still working on the script, it's largely complete. "We're in the process of tweaking right now. I think we know what we want," Stahelski said. "More importantly than anything, we know what we want to make. It's in the creatives. We know what we're trying to make. It's just a matter of getting it to the point where we feel, 'Okay, this is it. Let's go.' But we're closer than we've ever been, so that's good."

Cavill has been rumored to be in talks to star in a new Highlander since early 2021 but is not yet officially attached to the film. He's still the first name on the list for Stahelski. "In the vision in my head, I've always loved Henry Cavill," he said. "He's one of my big choices, I think." Stahelski and Cavill have talked about the role "several times," and he's the director's top choice. "It's not just about muscles and brooding. I think he's got an incredible range and I think he'd bring something very special," Stahelski said, adding that Cavill himself has been eager to take on the role. "His enthusiasm has been amazing in it."

The director also highlighted The Witcher, which stars Cavill as the titular monster hunter, joking about how he may be more prepared than most actors for the sword-fighting component of Highlander. "[He's had] a little bit [of training]. He's pretty good," Stahelski said. Currently filming season 3, The Witcher is just a small part of Cavill's busy schedule, as he also has a starring role in Matthew Vaughn's Argylle while persistent rumors claim that he may still yet return to the part of Superman.

Highlander will serve as a reboot of the original 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert as the titular character, Connor McLeod, an immortal who was born in the 16th century. The movie performed poorly at the box office and with critics but received two direct sequels after gaining a cult following: Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) and Highlander III: The Sorcerer (1995). A TV series featuring a different main character played by Adrian Paul spun off into the fourth film in the series in 2000, Highlander: Endgame. A remake of the original has been in development since 2008 when Summit Entertainment acquired the rights.

There is currently no release date for Highlander.
