Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima has revealed he once wanted to create a project centered on Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen called Mads Max.

On Twitter, Kojima explained that, during a meeting with Mikkelsen, he revealed his plans to the actor. "I have a number of ideas that I want to create with Mads as the main character," Kojima wrote. "I once explained one of them to Mads. He listened intently, but when I told him the title, he broke his face. He seemed to think I was joking. I was serious, though. The tentative title was 'MADS MAX'"

The name "Mads Max" is a play on the Mad Max franchise. Created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy, that franchise, which launched in 1979, follows former police officer Max Rockatansky as he navigates the trials and tribulations of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It's unclear from Kojima's post how that franchise may have influenced his idea for the game.

Kojima is best for his work on the critically acclaimed Metal Gear franchise, which was published by Konami, and such titles as Zone of the Enders and Policenauts. However, after 2014's Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Kojima and Konami parted ways. Following his departure from Konami, Kojima struck up a partnership with Sony. His most recent project, Death Stranding, released in 2019 and features Mikkelsen in the role of Clifford Unger, who has an important connection to player character Sam Bridges.

Mikkelsen has had key roles in a number of major films, including 2006's Casino Royale, 2016's Doctor Strange and 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As a result of his work, Mikkelsen has won a number of major honors, including The Game Award for Best Performance for Death Stranding. He's currently set to star as Gellert Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts film, replacing Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp as the character. Mikkelsen also has a currently unknown role in the fifth Indiana Jones film.

Developed by Kojima Productions, Death Stranding is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC. Death Stranding: Director's Cut launches for PlayStation 5 on Sep. 24. The original game received positive reviews upon release, with critics praising its graphics and inventiveness. Death Stranding: Director's Cut will feature new mechanics, weapons, missions, vehicles and more.
