WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Heroes Return #1 by Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness, Mark Morales, Matthew Wilson, and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

The world of Heroes Reborn has finally come to an end with one last epic confrontation between the Avengers and Squadron Supreme. The Avengers have managed to save the world and set reality back to the way that it was, but their victory has also created its own unique set of problems. The Squadron Supreme may have been defeated and their timeline undone, but these heroic manifestations of Mephisto's power are still very much alive in the returned Marvel Universe.

Not only that, but they remember where they came from, and Nighthawk has already started working out how to bring their world back.

While the Squadron Supreme put up as much of a fight as anyone could have in the face of the Avengers, they were ultimately unable to keep Mephisto's vision of the Marvel Universe a reality. Now that things have been returned to the way they were, the heroes of the Squadron have been living in a world that is only vaguely similar to their own, and they do not seem to be taking it well. Blur, Power Princess, and Doctor Spectrum have all become prisoners of the United States government while Hyperion continues flying through city skylines looking for a lost friend. Presumably, that friend is Nighthawk, who remembers his world just as well as the rest of his teammates. What's more, Nighthawk is now solely dedicated to returning to that world, even if it means once again disrupting reality.

Even though he was one of the first to realize something was wrong with the reality of Heroes Reborn, Nighthawk was fervently devoted to defending it at every turn. Once it became clear that the timeline created by Mephisto and Phil Coulson was in some way an aberration, Nighthawk only dug his heels in deeper, decrying the actions of the Avengers even after having lost the battle for his universe. This isn't that far from previous incarnations of the character, which have historically been the one member of the Squadron Supreme to stand against the rest of the team when their personal aspirations became detrimental to the rest of humanity.

One of the most famous instances of Nighthawk's defiance was when he formed his own superhero team known as the Redeemers, who first appeared in 1986's Squadron Supreme #9 by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Ryan. At the time, the original Squadron had enacted their Utopia Program, leading to the team taking over the entire planet. The Redeemers came together to put an end to the tyranny, and Nighthawk was ultimately able to talk some sense into his former teammates, convincing them to set things right.

Mephisto himself might be busy putting together his Council of Red, but there is no doubt that he will be keeping a close eye on the goings on of his own personal superheroes now that they have returned to a world protected by the Avengers. That being the case, it is only a matter of time before he looks to replace Phil Coulson as his herald, and there is likely no better or more vicious candidate for that position than Kyle Richmond.

Assuming he is still just as ready to hail Mephisto in this world as he was the last, the Avengers might just be looking at a rematch with an enemy that has already proven to be highly formidable and even more resourceful.
