WARNING: The following contains spoilers for "The World of No Return" by Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, Dean White, and VC's Cory Petit, from Heroes Reborn #7, on sale now.

Heroes Reborn has largely focused on the Squadron Supreme, who -- thanks to the unseen machinations of Mephisto -- have replaced the Marvel pantheon of heroes. In a world where the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other heroes never got the chance to exist, the Squadron Supreme survived their own versions of major Marvel events. As the Avengers slowly are assembled by Blade (one of the only people who seem to remember the way reality is supposed to work), the Squadron Supreme have turned their attention towards investigating the group of potential agitators.

As they do so, more chapters of their Marvel Universes' history is revealed -- including the revelation that Blur survived his own incarnation of Spider-Man's "One More Day" storyline by J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada.

During their investigation, Blur and Doctor Spectrum end up exploring Washington DC, ending up at a monument to Nick Fury -- who in this reality was elected President but was eventually assassinated. Doctor Spectrum wishes they could travel back in time to hang out with him and "maybe win the Vietnam War." But the usually happy-go-lucky Blur suddenly becomes dour and explains that sometimes things don't work out great when people try to change things, hinting his own time-travel adventures didn't go well. It turns out that years before the present day, Blur had to survive his own specific "One Moment In Time" event, where he's found himself in what appears to be the depths of hell.

Holding onto Mary-Jane Watson -- revealed to have at least briefly been his wife in this reality, Mary Jane Stewart -- the two sear to find one another again sometime down the line and embrace in one final kiss. Mephisto watches from the sideline, ecstatic with the events as they play out in front of him. Blur's attitude and personality are more akin to Spider-Man than anyone else on the Squadron Supreme (even if his adventures have been more mystically-tinted), so it makes sense that of all of them to form a bond with Mary-Jane it would be him.

But it's also notable that on top of surviving his own "One More Day" storyline -- wherein Peter Parker and Mary-Jane sacrificed their marriage in a deal with Mephisto, in exchange for saving May Parker and restoring Spider-Man's secret origin -- but that it also has elements of another major crossover: DC's Flashpoint, by Geoff Johns and Adam Kubert. The hints that Blur and Mary-Jane's lives together were affected by Blur's time travel echoes the result of Barry Allen trying to change the past and causing nothing but pain and chaos in the process. It also seems to serve as a quiet lesson for Blur that Doctor Spectrum is unaware of. It seems that Mephisto essentially fused the two elements for the Marvel speedster, allowing him to become the fallout of Blur's undisclosed travel through time.

It's an interesting concept, merging two of the most infamous events of the late 2000s/early 2010's in mainstream comics, all used to punish who is likely the most jovial member of the Squadron Supreme. It could also be seen as one final insult to Spider-Man, who Mephisto has taken a decided interest in over the years. Even though the events of "One More Day" were monumental for him, Mephisto proved that they can still come about even if Spider-Man doesn't exist in the world. It could even be seen as an additional way for Mephisto to make Mary-Jane suffer, as she'd been part of that original deal as well. In a series full of devilish reveals, this might be the cruelest truth about Mephisto's reality yet.
