It Follows director David Robert Mitchell is writing and directing the superhero movie Heroes & Villains for MGM Studios.

According to THR, Mitchell has already written the screenplay, and both he and the studio are keen on starting casting soon. Unlike the majority of superhero movies, Heroes & Villains is not based on a piece of previously existing source material but rather an original idea by Mitchell.

No story details have been revealed for Heroes & Villains beyond what THR describes as "a genre-blending and genre-bending project" that provides "a new take on superheroes."

Mitchell made his feature film directorial debut with the 2011 movie The Myth of the American Sleepover. His second feature, the horror film It Follows, increased Mitchell's profile significantly once it scored widespread critical acclaim and a $21.53 million worldwide box office gross on a $6.85 million budget.

Most recently, Mitchell directed the 2019 neo-noir Under the Silver Lake, which drew more divisive critical responses than It Follows and grossed only $1.9 million worldwide. After helming only indie features up to this point, though, Heroes & Villains will mark Mitchell's first foray into major studio filmmaking.

No release date has currently been set for Heroes & Villains.
