While his time as the Man of Steel may have come to an end, Henry Cavill is already gearing up for his next project -- an adaptation of the popular miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill is attached to star in and executive produce a new series based on Warhammer 40K, which is currently in the works at Amazon. THR reports that Amazon is currently in "final talks" to acquire the rights to the game from owner Games Workshop following a competitive bidding war. No writers or showrunners are currently attached to the project, though Vertigo Entertainment is attached to executive produce alongside Cavill.

What Is Warhammer 40K?

Warhammer 40,000 -- also known as Warhammer 40K or simply Warhammer -- is a tabletop game introduced by Games Workshop in 1987. In it, players simulate battle using miniature models of warriors and vehicles. As its title implies, Warhammer 40K is set approximately 40,000 years in the future. The game's story revolves around a stagnant human society being antagonized by aliens and various supernatural creatures.

Warhammer 40K is largely considered to be the most popular miniature wargame in the world. That said, the game's most dedicated playerbase resides in the United Kingdom, its place of origin. (Notably, Cavill himself is a native of Saint Helier, Jersey.) Over the years, Warhammer has spawned numerous spinoffs and tie-ins, including other tabletop games, video games, music, novels, an animated film and comic books published by companies like Titan and Marvel. There have also been previous talks of a potential live-action series adaptation.

Henry Cavill Has Hung Up His Cape as Superman

News of Cavill's involvement in Amazon's planned Warhammer series comes shortly after it came to light that the actor would no longer be portraying Superman in the DC Universe. The actor recently appeared as the Last Son of Krypton in Black Adam, ending a five-year absence from the role. Following Black Adam's premiere, Cavill officially announced that he was back as Superman, with a sequel to his 2013 solo film, Man of Steel, reportedly entering development.

However, Cavill's return came at a time when DC was undergoing a massive changing of the guard. Newly-appointed DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently confirmed that he is writing a new Superman film as part of his and Peter Safran's revamped DCU slate. The film will take place during an earlier point in the Man of Steel's life, and will not star Cavill. That said, Gunn and Safran have left the door open to potentially work with Cavill in the future.

"James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes," Cavill wrote in a statement addressing his DC departure. "...My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

Cavill is also preparing to bid farewell to his role as Geralt of Rivia on Netflix's live-action series adaptation of The Witcher. After starring in the show's first two seasons, the actor is set to bow out following its third, which is expected to premiere in the summer of 2023. Liam Hemsworth will then take over the role of Geralt starting with Season 4.
