Henry Cavill still wants to play Superman in a follow-up to Man of Steel.

Cavill spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about his eagerness to play the Last Son of Krypton again. "There is still a lot of storytelling for me to do as a Superman, and I would absolutely love the opportunity," the actor said. "The killing of Zod gave a reason for the character never to kill again. Superman falling to the ground and screaming afterward — I don’t think that was originally in the script, but I wanted to show the pain he had. I did far more emotional takes they didn't choose; tears were happening. He just killed the last remaining member of his species. That’s the choice he made in that moment, and he’ll never do that again. There's an opportunity for growth after that, to explore the psyche of Superman as a deep, seemingly invulnerable god-like being but with real feeling on the inside. As I always say, 'The cape is still in the closet.'"

At present, there is no clear indication whether Warner Bros. will ask Cavill to don the cape again. In July, Man of Steel screenwriter David S. Goyer said he believes WB might be moving forward with a sequel, but that he isn't involved and is busy with other projects. However, this past August, it was reported that despite rumors, Cavill will not make an appearance in The Flash or any other DCEU movie in the immediate future.

Currently, there are two projects in the works centering on a Black Superman. One is a new film written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams that will focus on a Black version of Kal-El. The other is a miniseries for HBO Max produced by Michael B. Jordan and centering on Val-Zod, a more pacifistic version of the Man of Steel who became a main character in the series Earth-2. Jordan may also star in the project, but so far, details on it have been kept under wraps.

For his part, Cavill said he's excited about both projects, regardless of what they mean for his future as the Man of Tomorrow. "It's exciting — Superman's far more than skin color," he said. "Superman is an ideal. Superman's an extraordinary thing that lives within our hearts. Why not have multiple Supermen going on? Joaquin Phoenix did a wonderful Joker movie; so what if it’s not tied to the rest of [the franchise]? They have multiple Superman comic book storylines happening at the same time."

All of Cavill's outings as Superman are available to stream on HBO Max.
