Recent online rumors have claimed that Henry Cavill would be reprising his role as Clark Kent/Superman in the 2023 DC Extended Universe film Shazam! Fury of the Gods. However, these reports have now been debunked.Variety put the kibosh on rumors of Cavill's return as the Man of Steel in the upcoming sequel to 2019's Shazam!, confirming them to be false after speaking with "two sources with direct knowledge of the production and Cavill's schedule."RELATED: Shazam 2 Confirms Filming Starts in Late SpringCavill first played Superman in 2013's Man of Steel, subsequently reprising the role for 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League. His next appearance as DC's golden boy will be in Zack Snyder's Justice League, which is slated to arrive on HBO Max next month. The DCEU's version of Supes did have a cameo at the end of the first Shazam! film, though was not played by Cavill. Rather, it was star Zachary Levi's stunt double Ryan Handley who donned the red and blue tights, and was filmed from the neck down. This is of note, as Shazam! director David F. Sandberg -- who is returning to helm Fury of the Gods -- actually addressed the rumors of Cavill's involvement in the sequel in a post to Twitter, though chose his words carefully. "Not going to comment on casting rumors for several reasons," he wrote. "One being you can't be sure about anything until it's happened. Halfway through shooting Shazam! the plan was still for Cavill to be in it. Scoopers could have scooped that and been right at the time but wrong in the end."
