When Superman might return to theaters is the question on the mind of many fans, but actor Henry Cavill hopes to play the Metropolis Marvel "sooner rather than later."Helping to launch the so-called DC Expanded Universe in 2013 with Man of Steel, Cavill has since donned the cape for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and last year's divisive Justice League. Now there's a question mark hanging over where Warner Bros. will take its superhero properties. However, with so many movies already listed on the studio's ever-changing slate, Cavill's return could be earlier than expected.

Speaking with Fandango at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Cavill teased when Superman might return. "I can't answer that definitely right now," the actor smiled, "but I'm hoping sooner rather than later. I've been talking to certain people, and hopefully we're gonna start talking to other people who are responsible for making those calls, and we shall see."

Although he couldn't confirm when he will next play Clark Kent and his Kryptonian alter ego, there was a knowing smirk to Cavill's response.

Ever since Man of Steel, there have been reports that Snyder or someone else could helm a sequel. While that would be the most likely place for Superman to appear next, studio executives may be planning something different. Given that Ben Affleck's Batman had a supporting role in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, there is no stopping a Cavill cameo in a film like Suicide Squad 2 or The Flash.

Only James Wan's Aquaman, David Sandberg's Shazam! and Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 2 are locked down for the DCEU, and if the rumors are to be believed, Cavill and Zachary Levi's blossoming bromance on social media could hint at a possible crossover with Superman and Shazam!. As for Man of Steel 2, Matthew Vaughn was tipped to direct, but there has been no news in a while.
