Hells Angels motorcycle club founder and Sons of Anarchy star Sonny Barger has died at the age of 83 due to liver cancer.

His passing was confirmed on his Facebook page via a final statement he prepared ahead of time "If you are reading this message, you’ll know that I’m gone," Barger wrote. "I’ve asked that this note be posted immediately after my passing. I’ve lived a long and good life filled with adventure. And I’ve had the privilege to be part of an amazing club. Although I’ve had a public persona for decades, i’ve [sic] mostly enjoyed special time with my club brothers, my family, and close friends.

"Please know that I passed peacefully after a brief battle with cancer," Barger continued. "But also know that in the end, I was surrounded by what really matters: My wife, Zorana, as well as my loved ones. Keep your head up high, stay loyal, remain free, and always value honor. – Sonny"

Barger and the Hells Angels are responsible for creating the modern image of motorcycle gang members and their often anarchic associations. With a history of criminal activity involving conspiracy to commit murder, drug and firearm charges, money laundering and arson, among other offenses, in his later years Barger served as a consultant on several Hollywood projects centered on motorcycle gangs. These include 1967's Hells Angels on Wheels and, more recently, Sons of Anarchy on FX, a show he was also cast in.

In Sons of Anarchy, Barger played Lenny "The Pimp" Janowitz, a role he took on for three episodes across three seasons. Janowitz is depicted as a former Sergeant-at-Arms member of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original, also known as SAMCRO. Throughout the series, he was shown to be incarcerated in the Stockton State Prison for the murder of three ATF agents.

The motorcycle gang founder also published a collection of books, including an autobiography titled Hell’s Angel — The Life and Times of Sonny Barger and the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club. It details some of the most notable experiences during his time with the club, including their most infamous monent -- the 1969 Rolling Stones concert in Altamont, California. There, the Hells Angels, who had been hired by the Stones for security, beat and injured a number of audience members, with one member of the Angels killing 18-year-old Meredith Hunter. Hunter was wielding a firearm, and the Angel who had stabbed Hunter claimed it was self-defense and was acquitted of charges.
