Young adult (YA) book lovers have been treated to movie adaptations of some of their favorite book series over the last few years. From adaptations of Jenny Han's To All The Boys I've Loved Before trilogy to Beth Reekles' The Kissing Booth trilogy, there have been plenty of well-advertised and popular book-to-movie adaptations that hit streaming platforms.

Among the many YA book-to-movie adaptations that have dropped, there are a few hidden gems that haven't received as much hype or promotion as some bigger titles. Most of these underrated book-to-movie adaptations are single titles that aren't a part of a book series. A list of six of the most underrated YA book-to-movie adaptations follows.

Along for the Ride Is Sweet and Deep

Along For The Ride

When it comes to YA contemporary books, Sarah Dessen is one of the most popular authors, which is why it's surprising that not many of her books have been adapted into movies. Along for the Ride is one of many Sarah Dessen titles to be adapted into a movie by Netflix. This movie follows Auden (Emma Pasarow) and Eli (Belmont Cameli), two teens who are insomniacs. As the rest of their small town sleeps, Auden and Eli embark on a quest that helps Auden live a fun, carefree life that she has been missing out on for most of her teen years. Along for the Ride isn't just a light-hearted teen romance; it also has a deeper emotional aspect to it with Eli's backstory and Auden's complicated home life.

Love & Gelato Is a Relatable Romp

Love & Gelato

Considering Love & Gelato is adapted from Jenna Evans Welch's New York Times Best-selling book of the same name, it's shocking that this movie wasn't well-promoted. This might be because this movie doesn't closely follow its book counterpart, unlike some other YA adaptations. But it's still a great YA adaptation of a beloved book series, following Lina (Susanna Skaggs), a teen who goes to Italy after making a promise to her sick mother that she would go there the summer before college. While in Italy, Lina learns more about herself, her background, love, and friendship, falling in love with everything the country has to offer her. Love & Gelato is a relatable journey of self-discovery before college that will leave viewers wanting to see what else is in store for Lina once the summer ends.

The In Between is both heart-warming and heart-wrenching to watch as Tessa recalls all her memories with Skylar and processes her grief over losing him so suddenly.

Let It Snow Is the Ultimate Feel-Good Movie

Let It Snow

Let It Snow is the perfect feel-good rom-com, adapted from John Green, Lauren Myracle, and Maureen Johnson's co-written novel of the same name. The movie tells three interwoven holiday romances with an ensemble cast starring Kiernan Shipka (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Mitchell Hope (Descendants), Jacob Batalon (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and others. In the movie, a small town brings together the ensemble cast of teens during a Christmas Eve snowstorm. Let It Snow has all the humor and heart necessary in a contemporary YA book-to-movie adaptation.

Before I Fall Puts an Emotional Spin on Time Loops

Before I Fall

Before I Fall is adapted from Lauren Oliver's book of the same name and stars Zoey Deutch (Set It Up). Sam (Deutch) is a teen who seemingly has it all: she's popular, gorgeous, and dating the hottest guy in school. February 12th is just another perfect day in Sam's life until she and her friends get into a car accident that instantly kills Sam. The next day, Sam wakes up to mysteriously find it's February 12th again. The day plays out the exact same way, and Sam realizes she's stuck in a time loop reliving the day of her death. Sam sets out to do everything right to try to prevent her death and, in the process, learns about every beautiful thing that she was missing out on while she was alive. Before I Fall is so much more than a time-loop drama; it provides necessary social commentary on the consequences of bullying as Sam sees the trauma caused by her and her friends' actions on the lives of others.
