Penelope Mitchell has joined the cast of the upcoming Hellboy reboot from Lionsgate and Millennium Films. Deadline reports that Mitchell will play Ganeida, who is described as "an elder witch who has decided that Nimue’s wrath has gone on for too long and must be stopped." The actress has previously appeared in Hemlock Grove and The Vampire Diaries and is set to star opposite Nicolas Cage in Between Worlds.
In the reboot, simply titled Hellboy, David Harbour's Hellboy and his team of paranormal researchers will try to save the world from a medieval sorceress known as the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich) before she eliminates mankind.
This casting new comes just days after the shocking, but widely praised, departure of actor Ed Skrein from the reboot. Skrein was tapped to play Major Benjamin Daimio, a character of Asian-American descent, but he decided to step down in order to allow a more accurate casting of the character. The producers have promised they'll be more "consistent" in the re-casting of this character.
Targeted for release in 2018, director Neil Marshall’s Hellboy stars David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Milla Jovovich as the Blood Queen and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan.
