The cast of the upcoming Hellboy reboot just got a little more divine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, American Gods star Ian McShane has joined the project -- tentatively titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen -- as Professor Broom, Hellboy's adoptive father.
The Hellboy reboot is currently aiming to start production in September. According to the report, the new movie will pit the title character against "a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind," likely the eponymous "Blood Queen."
McShane has enjoyed a long career in film and television, up to and including American Gods. His past work includes John Wick and its sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Golden Compass, Lovejoy and Dallas. He has also appeared in Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, The West Wing and much, much more.
In May, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola announced an R-rated reboot of the franchise. Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson is on board to produce, and Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mignola have penned the script for the film. Recently, Mignola revealed that the reboot, one which will be R-rated and take the franchise in a darker direction, was actually first conceived to follow the two movies that director Guillermo del Toro did. However, when del Toro didn’t want to be part of the new story, Ron Perlman took himself off the table which paved the way for Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) to take the director’s chair and for Harbour to step in as the lead.
Directed by The Descent‘s Neil Marshall, the upcoming Hellboy reboot is written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola and stars David Harbour in the title role. The film does not yet have a release date.
