Millenium Media confirms that a live-action reboot of Hellboy is in the works, with comics creator Mike Mignola set to pen the script alongside his Dark Horse Comics collaborator Chris Golden.

According to Deadline, the upcoming reboot will be titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Helmed by Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance co-director Brian Taylor, production will begin in Bulgaria sometime in March, with casting currently in the late stages. The Crooked Man will mark the first time in the Hellboy franchise that Mignola has penned a script for a film adaptation, and this installment intends to "expand Hellboy’s world through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series." According to Millennium Media’s President Jeffrey Greenstein, The Crooked Man will be the first in a series of new Hellboy films.

"The Crooked Man is a departure from all previous Hellboy films where Mike Mignola and the creator of the comics will finally shepherd an authentic version of his stories and characters in film form," said Greenstein in a statement. "This is the first in the series of films that will captivate audiences in familiar (and new) ways. Brian Taylor is an expert across the board, and I couldn’t think of a better person to bring this story to life to show our audience this different and original Hellboy slate of films."

The Crooked Man Finds Hellboy Stranded in Appalachia

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is a three-issue comic miniseries by Mignola and Richard Corben, first published in July 2008 by Dark Horse Comics. Like the comics, the upcoming film will take place in the 1950s and find Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in rural Appalachia. The two will stumble upon a small community led by the Crooked Man who, in the comics, was a man named Jeremiah Witkins who was hanged for a variety of crimes in the eighteenth century, though he returned from Hell to rule over this small Appalachian down haunted by witches.

Confirmation of The Crooked Man comes after reports that a reboot was in the works at Millenium Media after 2019's Hellboy starring David Harbour bombed at the box office. Created by Mignola, Hellboy made his comics debut in 1993 and starred in his first limited series in 1994 with Hellboy: Seed of Destruction by Mignola and John Byrne. Seed of Destruction was the basis of the first Hellboy feature film released by Sony Pictures in 2004, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Hellboy was followed by a sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, released by Universal Pictures in 2008. A third Hellboy film written and directed by del Toro was planned, with Ron Perlman reprising the titular role, but was revealed to be dead in the water in 2017. Millenium Media's 2023 slate of films also includes a comic book adaptation of Red Sonja, starring Matilda Lutz, Wallis Day, and Robert Sheehan.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man does not have a release date.
