Hellboy is making his way back into cinemas this April. However, his circumstances will be very different. The cinematic landscape he's entering into looks a lot different than his first two films. Now, movie studios are all about connected universes. From the MCU to the DCEU to even the Conjuring Universe, interconnected stories between movies are studio's best shot at making consistent blockbusters.

Lionsgate, who is producing Hellboy,  is no exception to that rule. With that in mind, we thought we'd offer some helpful suggestions for spinoff films in the Hellboy universe. So grab your crucifix and silver bullets, here are the 10 Spinoff Movies to Make After Hellboy.

10. B.P.R.D.

Hellboy might be the coolest occult detective in his universe, but he's far from the only one. The organization for which he works, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, is wide-reaching and diverse. Humans and monsters alike work to stop evil under the flag of the B.P.R.D., and we think the organization itself is ripe for a spinoff. It would feature the same team dynamic as a Guardians of the Galaxy or Fast and Furious, but would be set against the gothic, Lovecraftian world that makes Hellboy so entertaining. There are so many great members of the B.P.R.D. from the comics, and fans deserve to see them team up on screen.

9. Sir Edward Grey

One of the coolest ways to further explore the Hellboy universe would be to turn the clocks back. Sir Edward Grey is a one-man B.P.R.D. from Victorian England. As a paranormal investigator for Queen Victoria herself, Sir Edward sees some of the strangest, most unnerving corners of the Hellboy universe. This movie would be cool for a lot of reasons. Not only is Sir Edward an interesting character, but the film's time setting would make for great visuals. Imagine a spooky, stylized Victorian London featuring some Mike Mignola monsters. If that doesn't sell tickets, I don't know what will.

8. Simon Anders

Hellboy isn't the only B.P.R.D. member that has some great solo adventures. Take, for example, the vampiric story of Simon Anders. When a clan of vampires destroys his life, Simon ditches the B.P.R.D. and goes off on a personal vendetta. His story takes him all across the world, blurring the lines between good and evil, hunter and prey. Not only would this movie be great because of Simon's story, but because it would establish vampires in the Hellboy film franchise. Vampires are great villains, but to introduce them means explaining their weaknesses, powers, and history. Former Agent Anders's story is a great opportunity to do that.

7. Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga from Hellboy

One of Hellboy's strengths is the quality of its villains. And with all those villains falling somewhere into the horror genre, it's totally possible to make a horror-only movie set within the Hellboy universe. If that were to happen, we would absolutely recommend the Baba Yaga for a horror villain. Baba Yaga is an ancient witch from Slavic folklore. She is master of wild and dark magics, and lives in a house that walks on chicken legs. We've already received visual confirmation that that chicken house appears in the 2019 Hellboy movie via the trailer, so it's not crazy to think the Baba Yaga will also make an appearance. Nor is it crazy to suggest that a solo Baba Yaga horror flick would smash box offices, putting all the Nuns and Annabelles to shame.

6. Frankenstein

Yes, you read this right. Frankenstein is a part of the Mike Mignola-created universe. Hellboy meets up with him in Mexico and the two have a horrific battle. After that, we learn of Frank's horrible past, making him a sympathetic addition to the world of Hellboy monsters. A Frankenstein movie set within the Hellboy franchise would be a cool, unique way to present a classic story. It would be respectful of the original source material but would present it in a relevant, entertaining way to the modern moviegoer. Besides, we have no idea if Marvel is ever going to adapt their Tomb of Dracula series into the MCU, even though the concept of a classic-lit to comic to film movie is so appealing. But if the House of Ideas won't do it, Hellboy can.

5. Kate Corrigan

Making a Kate Corrigan film would kind of be like making an Indiana Jones movie in the Hellboy universe. Like Jones, Kate is somehow both badass and academic, an expert professor of mythology/death-defying explorer. Part of what makes the Hellboy comics so cool is their deep, ancient mysteries, but we sadly can't get too many of them in a series of two-hour films. This wouldn't be a problem for Kate Corrigan. Her whole character is built on being the expert in the room, always ready with some folkloric reference just when it's needed. Watching her uncover the truth behind legendary stories and apply that to fighting evil would be thrilling. In fact, it'll definitely be better than at least one Indiana Jones film.

4. Rasputin

If making a Baba Yaga movie would be a supernatural horror film, making a Rasputin movie would be kind of a moral one. Rasputin is the classic case of becoming evil through seeking knowledge. As he wondered the landscape of early twentieth-century Russia, Rasputin learned more and more forbidden things, eventually declaring himself the man who would bring around the apocalypse. This would be a great villain-centric film. We'd watch Rasputin go from naive to evil as the dark and unknowable forces that he seeks out surround him. Comic book media is about to experience its first villain-centric movie in 2019's Joker, and with that guaranteed to be a hit, the Hellboy universe wouldn't be foolish to try the same thing.

3. Lobster Johnson

lobster johnson

After years of being trapped in a comic, the Hellboy universe's coolest vigilante is finally heading to the big screen. Though we think it'll be a small role in 2019's Hellboy movie, Thomas Hayden Church will play the first live-action version of Lobster Johnson. This character is a crimefighter/occasional monster hunter in 1930s New York, where he battles mobsters, ancient cults, and of course, Nazis. A Lobster movie would be a pulpy, stylized action-horror blast, with the potential to launch a who new line in the Hellboy franchise. Even if the studio didn't want to make a movie, it wouldn't be a mistake to turn this character's adventures into a spooky, gritty TV drama. Maybe like True Detective meets Boardwalk Empire? Count me in.

2. Liz Sherman

Let's get one thing straight. In the comics and, presumably, in the upcoming movie, Liz Sherman is not Hellboy's girlfriend. She's got enough problems of her own without being in a relationship with the Beast of the Apocalypse. Those problems suck for her, but for us, they could make a great film series. What's so interesting about Liz is that, unlike the rest of the B.P.R.D., the main threat that she faces is internal. Liz's power over fire is tenuous, and more than once she's lost control, hurting innocent people in the past. Watching her deal with this curse while trying to use it to fight evil would make for a great supernatural drama. And with the X-Men films currently on hiatus, moviegoers have a need for mature, dark stories about grappling with power.

1. Abe Sapien

Well come on, you knew that this character would be number one. Abe Sapien is another awesome, beautifully-written character in the Hellboy universe. Not only that, but Hollywood is having a "hot fish person" moment that any studio would be wise to adapt. In all seriousness, there is so much potential for an Abe Sapien movie. His origin is a fascinating mystery. His look is interesting and he's got a dry, James-Bond-esque way of responding to evil. Lionsgate should pursue an Abe Sapien movie pronto, as it would bring in old fans and explore new corners of the Hellboy universe. Just one stipulation: put Doug Jones back in the suit.
