5 DEATH PARADE

Death Parade is about a man named Decim who decides a person's fate after death through various activities that showcase their true colors. Although Decim has no issue with handing out proper judgment, he soon meets someone who'll make him judge his occupation.

Like Hell Girl, Death Parade is also episodic and highlights different characters and their tales within an interconnected plotline. Both series highlight the death theme and feature protagonists who are cruel at-first but become more open as the story progresses. However, it is worth mentioning that Death Parade's concepts are brought out more through character.

4 PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA

Like Hell Girl, Madoka Magica follows the happy life turn dark approach to its storyline and is a thought-provoking and strange series that diverts expectations. Both series have wonderfully stylized animation and aren't afraid to get a little intense with the violence incorporated in each series.

3 PARANOIA AGENT

Paranoia Agent is about a mysterious attacker named Shounen Bat who's endlessly hurting civilians in his town with his golden baseball bat. Wanting to put a stop to his rampage, two detectives decide to investigate the matter. However, with each passing day, the citizens' anxiety spikes as many are worried that Shounen Bat will get them next. Thus this anime is a race against time as the detectives must stop Shounen Bat before everyone becomes overly paranoid.

Like Hell Girl, Paranoia Agent features different problems happening to new characters per episode alongside a deep dive into the mindset of each new character introduced. Paranoia Agent is considered a classic Horror anime that some modern shows can't top today.

2 ELFEN LIED

Elfen Lied is about an exotic girl named Lucy, who is imprisoned by the government because of her supernatural abilities. Lucy does escape her confinement and meets two individuals--who happily take her in--though they do not know of her importance to the government and problems they will encounter soon.

Having to make crucial decisions to protect both worlds, Lain discovers a deeper meaning behind individuality, awareness, and insight.

Like Hell Girl, Serial Experiments Lain tackles unpleasant topics and has sharp psychological and thriller elements to keep people tuned to the story. Serial Experiments Lain is also considered a must-watch for any fan of horror anime.
