Actor Helena Bonham Carter has claimed that Johnny Depp has been "completely vindicated" after winning his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard earlier this year.
In an interview with The Times, Bonham Carter was asked if she thought Depp would be welcomed back to Hollywood after the Virginia trial ruled that Heard had been found liable in all three matters of defamation raised. "Oh, I think he’s completely vindicated," she stated. "I think he’s fine now. Totally fine." She then commented on if she believed the trial's verdict was the pendulum of #MeToo swinging back, saying, "My view is that she got on that pendulum. That’s the problem with these things — that people will jump on the bandwagon because it’s the trend and to be the poster girl for it."
Bonham Carter has worked with Depp on seven films, of which the majority were directed by Tim Burton, who also recently came out in support of Depp, saying that he would cast Depp in a future project if there was a role suitable for his talent. "I think with anybody, you just, I never work with anybody even with my friends, it's not like a party so I always would like to try it with him or anybody to kind of go; what is the part? What is the thing? And then is it the right thing, is it the right character?" Burton explained. "I take things on those basis and no others."
Depp Will Play King Louis XV in Upcoming French Movie
Following the conclusion of his defamation suit, Depp was cast in Jeanne du Barry, an upcoming historical film about Madame du Barry, King Louis XV’s last royal mistress at the Court of Versailles. The French film will mark Depp's first feature role since 2020's Minamata as well as his first time acting in French. Jeanne du Barry was directed by Maïwenn, who also co-wrote the film's screenplay with Teddy Lussi-Modeste in addition to starring as the title character. The film is expected to hit French cinemas in 2023.
Meanwhile, Heard will next be seen in 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a follow-up to the 2018 DC blockbuster Aquaman. Despite a fan campaign to have Heard removed from the DC Extended Universe sequel, a spokesperson for the star confirmed that she is still in the film. Heard will once again portray Mera, the warrior princess and love interest of Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry/Aquaman, in The Lost Kingdom, which opens in theaters on Dec. 25, 2023.
