The following contains spoilers for Heartstopper Season 1, now available on Netflix.

Heartstopper has not been streaming on Netflix for long, but it is already gaining a great deal of attention. It has a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes; it has been trending regularly on Twitter; it has also consistently stayed in Netflix's Top 10 around the globe since the release of its eight-episode first season. With Heartstopper's massive impact, it is likely at this point that Netflix will renew it for a second season. Heartstopper has set up Season 2 so that there are a lot of plot points to explore if the show is renewed.

Heartstopper is based on a web comic that has since been published as a series of graphic novels by Alice Oseman. There are currently four volumes of Heartstopper published, with the fifth and final volume set to be released in 2023. The TV show has only covered Volumes 1 and 2 so far, so there is still a great deal of content from the graphic novels that the show can explore. Additionally, the show has set up many of its own storylines that can further grow in Season 2.

Nick and Charlie doing snow angels

As of the end of Season 1 of Heartstopper, Nick and Charlie are officially boyfriends. When the season finale occurs, they have been dating in secret for several episodes, and Charlie almost breaks up with Nick. Nick grabs Charlie's hand in front of the rest of the school, and then they go talk. Charlie shares his concerns about ruining Nick's life, but Nick then expresses his feelings for Charlie. Nick tells Charlie that his life is better because of him. They then officially become a couple, and Nick comes out to his mom as bisexual. In Season 2, now that the rest of the school knows that Charlie and Nick are together, the two of them will likely be dealing with being a public couple.

In the graphic novel that Heartstopper is based on, Truham and Higgs take a joint school trip to Paris in Volume 3. This trip includes the introduction of Mr. Farouk -- a love interest for Mr. Ajayi -- as well as Tao and Elle officially getting together. Tao and Elle's relationship has been hinted at throughout Season 1, and it is clear that they have feelings for each other. This relationship is likely to happen slowly, though, because both have expressed concerns about ruining the friendship. If Heartstopper continues to follow the graphic novels in Season 2, then Tao and Elle will become a couple in the next season. Some other plot points from Volume 3 include Nick's brother showing up and Nick being made Captain of the rugby team.

Tara and Darcy walk ahead of Nick and Charlie.

Tara and Darcy are now out as a couple on social media as of the end of Season 1. All of their friends know that they are together, and they remain a solid couple. Volume 3 of the Heartstopper graphic novels explores Darcy's relationship with her family in more detail, so that might be a part of Season 2. Tara will likely continue to deal with other people's reactions to her sexuality and her relationship, as she did in Season 1. In addition, the friendship group of Nick, Charlie, Tara, Darcy, Tao, Elle and Isaac is sure to continue bonding with one another. Tao may even grow to like -- or at least tolerate -- Nick in Season 2.

Heartstopper has not yet been renewed for a second season, but there will hopefully and likely be an announcement coming within the next couple of months. It is a powerful coming-of-age show that is one of the best things to watch on Netflix right now. In the meantime, along with the new shows that will be streaming in May, all eight episodes of Season 1 are available to stream and re-watch on Netflix.
