Created by Rich Eustis and Michael Elias, Head of the Class ran for five seasons between 1986 and 1991 on ABC. It starred Howard Hesseman as a teacher who helps a group of high school students — played by Dan Frischman, Dan Schneider, Tony O'Dell, Robin Givens and Kimberly Russell — realize that there is more to life than grades. The reboot will follow a similar storyline, with Isabella Gomez playing the inspiring teacher.

Diaz will play Elliot Olsen, who is described as "a goofy English teacher who loves his job and is genuine to a fault." Goodjohn is Robyn Rook, a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) queen turned Twitch streamer and the de facto leader of the class, even if she refuses to admit it. Severs will portray Terrell Smith, a uber-positive athlete who is all about team mentality, while Escalona is Miles Mendelson, "the shy, introverted, overthinking coder, who'd rather spend time with computers than people." Finally, Miller recurs as Principal Maris, who, while she may seem intimidating, always puts the students first.
